So I have an idea for this thread where we can all post our favorite record stores from our travels. I'm going to start off with my favorites in the Tampa Bay Area and a couple of nice places I just visited in Nashville last week. Hopefully you all will join in with your choices and I'll keep this first post edited with a complete list by state. In my mind this is mostly for stores with vinyl collections but if you know of a particularly good CD store feel free to post away. Just don't post every Virgin Megastore and Tower Records in your city. This is an ode to the little unknown mom & pop joints. Feel free to include a short review about the selection, prices, and feel of the shop. Also please include either a webpage link to the store you're listing or a complete address.

Sacramento:
The Beat
Located at 18th and J Streets in downtown Sacto. Has the largest selection of used vinyl in the city. The owner definitely knows his vinyl, knows his grading, and knows the value of what he sells. He also knows how to care and store his vinyl. All of the "rare" used vinyl is properly cleaned, the inner sleeves are replaced with the non-abrasive type (with the original sleeves still included) and the outer covers are placed in protective sleeves as well. Prices for used vinyl range from $3.00 all the way to $250 (for a sealed mono pressing of "A Hard Days Night." They also sell used and new CDs and DVDs. They have an eBay store as well where they sell most of their very rare merchandise: http://stores.ebay.com/The-Beat-On-Line (Submitted by JMT)
Esoteric Records
A smaller used vinyl store located on El Camino Avenue. The selection is not as varied as The Beat, and the condition of the product is hit and miss. I did find a Capitol pressing of Paul McCartney's "RAM" that was in VG condition. The also have some rare vinyl but their prices are a bit high for what you get. (Submitted by JMT)
Dimple Records
Two locations in Sacramento (Arden Way) and Roseville (Douglas Blvd.)
A small selection of used viny, however they so stock some new (Simply Vinyl and a few Classic Records). The mostly stock CDs and DVDs. (Submitted by JMT)
San Francisco:
Aquarius Records 1055 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA. (415) 647-2272. map
This is the best record store i have ever been to. Sure, Amoeba has 100 times as many cds as aquarius, but a lot of those cd's that amoeba has are awful.
while aquarius is a small store, every cd they have is there for a reason. they have a website, with access to it from the store with which you can listen to samples of everything they have in the store, and every cd has a review of why they have it. they also paste these reviews to the outside of every album in the store.
i go there not with an intention of buying something specific (i usually do that online) but to find something new. I ask someone working there for suggestions based on what i like. they run around the store grabbing stuff from every corner and i wind up with a huge pile of stuff ive never heard of. i then go to their computer and listen to samples (their samples are 30 seconds to 2 minutes long) of all of it and read reviews, and wind up buying 5 cds.
this is something i have always wanted in a store. that it is not just a place to buy music, but a place to find music as well. that the store is a mechanism for spreading music out into the world.
i couldnt recomend them more. ive been to cd stores all over san francisco, the bay area and the country. while many of them are wonderful, none of them come close to aquarius records. (Submitted by Rhythmdevils, sorry I missed your post for so long)
Westchester:
Soundsations 8736 South Sepulveda Boulevard
This is ever so slightly north of LAX. You can watch airplanes take off and land from the parking lot behind it.
Great little place. Not huge, but they have a nice stock of LPs as well as used CDs. Mostly alternative rock, and I don't think I've ever heard the employees play a bad track. I've bought more than one CD just by asking them what's on.
If you're in the neighborhood, stop in and say hello. It's a good place. (Submitted by Uncle Erik)

Sally's Records
This little shop located in the vintage area of Westport, CT is known for its incredible service. The owner, Sally, knows just about EVERYTHING there is to know about anything. Sally's place is good for those who want to just browse and find something maybe a little unexpected. Her records are unorganized - just put in different shelves and boxes located around the tiny store... but you will find some really neat stuff for prices that you can't afford to miss out on ($4 for an unopened Buck Clayton album!). But when I'm visiting home, it's not even the prices that drive me to go to Sally's store - it's the service. Sally is by-far the nicest record seller I've ever met and is just warm-hearted and friendly. She reminds me of my grandmother If you want to learn something new about music, or if you feel 'spontaneous' and feel like expanding your music collection's genre list, Sally's records is a great place to go because the unorganized records means for more open-minded discovery, and it also means for an entertaining, one-on-one shopping experience. Tampa Bay Area:
Bananas Music. http://www.musicfinder.com
A truly amazing record store. Their vinyl warehouse is truly packed with over 2 million discs. Found the albums that I always look for at the little stores but never find. They sell on GEMM but nothing beats the experience of browsing through this many records. The owner Doug prices his records at the counter based on the average price at GEMM, usually a bit lower than the average and he writes off the highball values. It can be hard picking up a much wanted record without a price tag and then finding it's over your budget, but it's a risk worth taking. The 2nd warehouse has a huge selection of $1 records with an extra offer of $5 free if you spend $20. That's a lot of records and the selection there is impressive also.
Sound Exchange. Three locations:
14246 N Nebraska Ave, Tampa, FL
The main location in Tampa is my close-to-home place for a vinyl fix. Quality is usually very good. The store owner here is a big vinyl guy and does a lot of hunting around for rare albums on his own. If you want to find mint condition Beatles albums, first pressings or rarities, this is the place. Just be prepared to pay book value.
Vinyl Fever. Link.
Nice indie cd store with a selection of mostly new vinyl. Budget vinyl has been phased out. Rare or mint condition used records are mixed in with the new vinyl and are reasonably priced. Friendly staff and a great CD selection (new and used) with featured new cd's on several listening booths.
Sensous Sounds. 4216 East Bush Blvd Tampa, Fl 33617.
Audiophile shop with a "loss leader" back room of cd's, with all regular priced cd's coming in at $10.99. Excellent selection. Located 2 blocks east of Busch Gardens.
Sarasota:
Daddy O's Record Rack. 312 Laurel Rd E, Nokomis, FL (941) 480-9100
Located a bit south of Sarasota. Joe Ponticelle, the store owner, has one amazing collection of vinyl for sale. Most of it was purchased during his time in Los Angeles from estate and yard sales. He's not a strictly "book value" guy either, with most records coming in between $3-$5, up to $10 for the best records by the best artists. Records are usually in great visual condition but may require some extra cleaning to play their best. Well worth a stop if you're driving down I-75 to South Florida, just a couple miles west of the interstate. Be sure to call ahead because as Joe says, "I like to fish, a lot".
Illinois
Chicago:
Reckless. http://www.reckless.com/ 2 locations 1532 N Milwaukee & 3161 N. Broadway
Modest sized music store with wide selection of genres. sells new and used albums from 3-14$ each. they usually feature in store performances. if you really can't find a cd or record, chances are they'll have it at reckless. And in the milwaukee location in wicker park, there are plenty of restaurants (like Earwax for example) to check out. You can even get yourself a deep fried twinkee just around the corner. The Record Exchange. 256 Washington St, Salem, MA 01970
lots of nice, new cds, records, and movies, also a great used collection for much less money. used cds are always either in perfect condition, or are labeled as having "surface marks," which brings the price way way down and normally means that there's a very small and insignificant scratch that eac will barely notice.
you can also trade cds in, and they give pretty good prices for them (you can get cash for them, as well as trading for other albums, though why you'd do that I don't know). (Submitted by Binkgle).

Finyl Vinyl
This shop is great for finding the more rare records in great condition. Owned by two people, I think a father and son. Prices are a little steep, but if you're an experienced vinyl buyer, you'll know what in there is worth it and what isn't. The owner himself told me that he doesn't try and persuade people or use tricks in order to sell things - he knows that the returning customers are the ones that can fend for themselves. They specialize in used Classic Rock vinyl, but also carry Jazz, Blues, and Funk. (Submitted by Aman)
Jazz Record Center
An awesome shop in Lower Manhattan. These guys have the most unbelievable jazz vinyl collection! They must have close to 8,000 LPs in stock. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable and the other few people that work for him are also very nice. They have a lot of original Blue Note and Fantasy stuff. They cary just about every jazz artist known to man, neatly organized. Every record I've bought from there has been in NM- condition - no exceptions! They sell sealed records starting at $8-9 (mind you, these are audiophile 180gram pressings) and used ones start around $4. These guys sell nothing but jazz. They also have a healthy selection of CDs, cassettes, books, and other assorted videos. These guys get my top recommendation. (Submitted by Aman)
A1 Records
This store specializes in mostly funk music. They have well-configured turntables so you can demo the music before you buy it. The salespeople are awfully experienced and know what they're talking about. They always have a 'hot item' playing in the background. They do sell some jazz and classic rock, but come to this place if you especially want to hear new and old funk music. Prices are around $8-10 per record, and have never gotten an item in poor condition. This store is very hands-on and perfect for the funk/rock vinyl collector that is anal about the condition of their records. (Submitted by Aman)
Other Musicwww.othermusic.com
This shop, in the Village area, specializes in avant-garde/alternative music. They have a somewhat hefty vinyl section, I'd reckon about 1,000 LPs for selection. Their choices are varried and very impressive, but their prices are a little weird. I found it a bargain to pay 11 dollars for a sealed Flaming Lips album, but a little expensive to pay 16 bucks for a used Ornette Coleman album which had a pretty raggy album cover. I'm not quite sure how their pricing system works - it probably factors in both condition and rarity. These guys have an awesome CD selection too, but what's even more surprising is that they seem to have just about every indie/mid-label artist's vinyl releases in stock for very good prices, so not only can you get a lot of great used vinyl, but you can buy sealed LPs from the likes of Sigur Ros, The New Pornographers, and the like - lots in stock and for great prices. Check these guys out if you're into the post-rock or other more avant-garde new age music scene. There's a good amount of jazz albums to purchase as well, but in the case of used jazz/classic rock LPs, bring your pricing book with you because there's the possibility that you may be paying a little much for your selections. It is a certifiable jones for the record geek - a harsh jones that has taken this vinyl junkie to all points around the country looking for records. Amoeba in San Francisco, CA and Berkeley, CA. Aron’s in Los Angeles, CA. Reckless in Chicago, IL. Kim’s Underground in New York City. The Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. Jerry’s Records in Pittsburgh, PA. Used Kid’s Records in Columbus, OH.
And how does My Mind’s Eye stack up against these nationally known destinations for both audiophiles and obsessive fanatics alike? Great. F--kng great. My Mind’s Eye is smaller than all of them but cheaper too and there is always a pile of records sitting next to the counter that just came in on a trade from somebody whose father just died and left a couple of crates of dusty platters sitting in the basement. A friend of mine runs this store. All you "Darkest Desires" fans should go there if you're ever in the Cleveland area. Great selection of 70's rock, metal, NWOBHM (a specialty), punk/hardcore, stoner rock, japanese rock, and lots of other heavy music.. (submitted by Masonjar)
