Grado sr60 = Koss PortaPros? - Page 2

I really don't think the difference is as big as many people are making it out to be (at least to a non-audiophile).

Like many have said, the PP's have bloated bass and aren't as smooth and balanced as the SR-60's are but aside from that, the difference isn't that major.

The Grado's have slightly more detail (the difference isn't that much), better instrument separation, and a wider soundstage but it's really not a significant upgrade. The only really major difference is the bass. The SR-60's have less of it but it's tighter and isn't bloated like PP's.

While the SR-60s are great headphones, I don't know if an upgrade from a pair of Portapros will really "wow" you all that much. They'll definitely sound nice but if you're expecting a significant step up, you might be a bit disappointed.

I don't know how if this comparison means anything considering the price gaps but the difference between the SR-60s and my new A900's is quite a bit greater than between the Portapro's and SR-60 (for reference, I paid $70 for the PP's, $130 for the SR-60's and about $220 for the A900's, all in Canadian dollars before tax and/or shipping)

well in my experience i found the clarity/high end detail and 'airyness' of the grado sound was astounding, something i've never experienced when i had Portapros and Eggos.

like for instance, with albums like Eric Clapton unplugged, where you HEAR the impact of the strings on the frets.

Any Grado SR series will *SMOKE* a portapro... for replicating guitar tones. As much as I love all the Koss 60 ohm cans, they just lack the pick attack dynamics and detail resolution in the upper midrange tones.

Not to knock the Koss too much. We're comparing a $35 mass/bulk produced headphone to a hand made $75 model. So the SR60 SHOULD by all means spank the porta. The fact that were even comparing the 2 says something about the price/performance of the Koss.

It brings up an interesting point though. You can't always base your decision on what you read. The PP's are excellent headphones and they deserve the praise they get, but a lot of times people forget the "for the price" part.

I'll agree on that, just going by my memory of the SR60. But I don't think the SR60 is so much better than the Portapro that it will make anyone feel like throwing the latter away (for that you probably need to grab a Senn HD580 or otherwise look at other $100-and-up headphones).

I'll admit to being (a well known) Grado-disliker around here... I don't feel that Grados offer very good sonic value for the money, and they have comfort and build quality issues that can drive a lot of people crazy. There's so much competition lately that I think Grado has effectively been dethroned on the low end, and continue to be challenged at whatever price point Grado offers. I know they're a smaller family owned business and are at a disadvantage, but knowing this doesn't help much.

Thanks for all the replies guys, just one more question now..
I heard the SR60's are fairly weak for games because of their Soundstage, does this change with the higher level models? I have a friend willing to sell his 2nd hand SR225's for half the retail price, so now I am torn between the SR225's and Ath A500's. Which of these 2 has the bigger/better soundstage? I will be using these half the time for gaming..

Koss portapro= fun fun fun at a very low cost and small size factor with very good comfort with the comfort zone.

PortaPros don't sound like an average can in it's price range. I find their tone outstanding for the price, only beat by cheaper KSC75.
SR-60 bring slightly more colouration, have less bass (but with more extension) and are much livelier. And as mentioned before:

I'd say you wouldn't look back if you like the signature and there is a lot of to like.
