mmm who knows? I didn't expect my PPA1 to run the K1000s but it does a great job. In other words don't presume anything. Try it first.

ASL Amps

I use K1K with ASL AQ1001DT with NOS (black plate) tubes and the sound is terrific. They still tend to have siblence, but it has a smooth and accurate sound.

Actually, the stp80 sounds very good with the K1K..although not as extended in the upper FR as when/if paired to a FirstW amp. The FW's are very good amps for the money for a serious listener, and fan of the K1.

This said, the K1K is a wallet whore feeding out of the atm300se and the appropriate IC's, the sound is unreal. And when fed upstream with true components and a neutral signal path, this combo is an excellent value in HiFi. Nik has an AT model paired I believe with his K1 and a gorgious system to my recollection too.

I was very impressed with the AT's synergy and ability to drive the K1K, and found the indefatiguable sound and unfailingly matched detail in this setup to be quite surprising for a headphone. The AT's sound and power fancies an a phone such as the AKG while not introducing anything additionally to the signal itself, reccommended.

FOR THE MONEY!?!?! You must be on crack, they're over $1000 if you buy them now, not to mention a hella powerful amp to drive them. No, I've never heard them. I believe you that they sound amazing, but still, they're only headphones; $1000+ is ALOT. I'd say FOR THE MONEY KSC75s are the best.

Yes, for the money the KSC-75 is king, however, my K1K was 'only' $720 so I regard it as excellent value
And yes, they are fantastic. The only others that are on a par of what I've heard is the Stax SR-X Mk3 as they share many attributes and sonics. Both are amazing.

Hella power amp to drive them? Not really.. The Cayin did a admirable job driving the K1000, & the Raptor is also quit capable of driving them along with big Joe (210.00)

Sorry..But I'd rather spend 1,000 for the K1000 instead of 20.00 for the 75's..Better value IMO.

Wow....old k1000 thread gets bumped up. Proving it's still a FOTM I'm one of those that doesn't think it's a great deal. $1000 for an earspeaker that's discontinued and extremely hard to service. It is the best sounding AKG I've heard, but for $1000 I'd expect more impact then it could deliver. For audiophilia, I think the HD580 is the current great value headphone. Once it's scarce....I duno: maybe the Audio Technica A900 (they're certainly a better value then more high end ATs IMHO).

I would recommend that you take another listen to the K1000 with proper amplification (First Watt F1, Air Tight 300se, etc.) and proper cabling. IMHO you will be pleasantly surprised.

Well for the money and when I can sit and listen a dedicated and higher end system fits the bill..And to my recollection, the K1K (when I last purchased was $650) and anytime I want a NOS pair, I can buy from my friend whom I unloaded my pair initially to, (for the $675) You did stumble across a great point, often overlooked when building a system around this phone..and this is the price factored in for proper amplification.

I stated that I had listened FW which is a real nice pair for this phone..but not the best. I don't want to even go into how much I spent on my AT custom..haha..and no I am not on crack. How funny

BTW, $1000 is not a lot of money on headphones, music, or sound in general for some ..very diverse is the different classes to headfi, and audiophilia

Good thing I can't make it to the international meet I like my current system and HD650 just fine: especially for classical music. Just going by responses about the ultra high end cans, I'm affraid the only others I might find better are the Omega IIs or HE90s. The AKG house sound just doesn't synergize with my ears: always hear colored upper mids....no matter which AKG I listen to. Don't get me wrong, the k1000 is a fine headphone: but I'd rather have a headphone that embodies the sonic characteristics I'm looking for.

You running the 650 balanced? Otherwise I would think the K1000 would wax a 650.

Maybe you just don't hear correctly!

Times certainly have changed since this thread first started....hasn't it?

And no, I'm not running the HD650 balanced: it sounds that great single ended on a tube amp with my digital sources. My hearing must be good since the "veil" only seems to add soundstage and dimension to the natural timbre of violins. I can hear all sorts of details and limitations of bad recordings

But I guess it just goes to show how subjective this all is: a few Head-Fiers on here run the inexpensive HD650 on $45k systems, while others prefer the R10, SR-007, HE90, HE60, or k1000. I think we should all be aware that each headphone has its own sonic characteristics that some will adore and others will feel luke warm about. But I guess one constant is that our wallets stay empty
