Not to my ears. I was happy to unload my new K1000s on a Head-fier at a significant discount. I was running them with the EAR V20 and Meridian G08.

Why does everyone feel so defensive about their systems? Whenever someone doesn't like something, it is always everything BUT the headphones that is at fault. And of course the solution is to use whatever components or brands that the poster itself is using.

Wish I would have known - I will always accept heavily discounted items

I agree....it must be human nature to assume that what you like, everyone else will like. In an ideal world, that would help us stay cordial and sociable. But instead, we like to have debates on what tastes great or is less filling I'm a stout and porter kind of beer guy: and I don't get why it isn't that everyone loves stouts

We all have different shaped ears and music preferences. So there is not going to be a golden, end all be all headphone for everyone. Thank goodness...wouldn't life be bland if all we had was one headphone brand? If someone is looking for a different type of headphone, the best amp and source isn't going to radically change a headphone to something that it's not. A well amped and sourced HD650 will sound much better then a well amped and sourced k1000 for some people, and a well amped and sourced k1000 will sound much better then a well amped and sourced HD650 for some people. Different strokes for different folks.

I always like a win-win situation

I've been lucky enough to hear a balanced HD650/SDS-XLR combo (Thanks Alex), and the HD650's really scaled with this amp. At this point, it becomes a matter of taste and my tastes actually lean toward the balanced HD650 w/ a more affordable balanced amp .
