Phono Stage Problems

Hi all, I have a budget 70's pioneer turntable, the PL-117D, and an old 1980's kenwood KA-880SD amplifier. The phono stage worked fine when i was in college this past semester, the MC, and MM button was a little scratchy when changing between the two, but nothing to be really concerned with. To cut to the chase, I hooked it all up and the music is muffled beyond belief, i have to crank the amp to even hear the music, in its muffled form. Could this be a problem with the phono stage in the amp, or could it be the needle?

Sorry for the long thread, thanks for your time

Ok so i figured out it was the fact that that a switch wasnt being turned on due to the tracking of the tonearm. GOD i hate automatic TT's, anyway's with the volume problem fixed, theres so much resistance in the tonearm to move inwards on the record that it doesnt catch the beginning groove, nor does placing it on a groove allow it to stay there. Wtf, this is retarded. ANY ideas on how to fix this, It seems product specific however.

If you open the bottom cover to the TT and study the mechanical linkage, you could probably disable the "automatic" linkage and make the arm strictly manual. I remember cleaning dried grease from cam wheel grooves on tables that had sat up for extended periods. A little elbow grease, naptha and qtips could be the answer to your problems. Also check the anti skating device settings.

I checked a bunch of stuff, and basically followed the linkage, and now its working fine in strictly manual operation. It's fine though at least i can enjoy the vinyl now
