The second I got my iPod I installed Rockbox... never used iTunes for anything. Sadly Rockbox has some issues with the 4th gen iPods that are relatively fixable at the cost of decreased battery life (mucho decreased, it seems). So it's back to the iPod software and iTunes, just to see if it really is as god awful as it seems. My fingers are crossed and I've taken preparations to blow my brains out if need be.

I had RockBox on my 4th Gen for a while, but I couldn't get it not to freeze. It was so annoying that I had to go back to iTunes. But boy did I love the FLAC support and drag and drop.

Well, iTunes I can live with, the iPod software is so awful. I can't even find half my music with their worthless browsing methods. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Is there anybody running RockBox successfully on a 4th gen that has no problems? I love the interface on it, and the simpleness of operation. Plus, I belivge the sound was even better with rockBox.

Is there any way I can make itunes stop deleting my music in my ipod? This Godforsaken piece of garbage eliminates every song that is gone in the itunes library or my music folder. I got an 80 gig ipod and my pc only has 16.9 gb free space so i load up my pc with songs to put in the ipod then sync. after that How do i add more??? I delete the songs on the pc to add new ones then itunes copies the new ones but eliminates the other music in the ipod if it doesnt exist in the hard drive anymore. Is there a way around this??? All I want to do is add music for petes sake. What kind of garbage is this

Try setting iTunes to manually sync your iPod. You will have to add and delete all the music on the player manually.

p.s. I'm going on memory here, but when you plug in your iPod, and it starts to sync, stop that process. Then on the left click on your iPod's name and you should see a screen with an option to turn manual syncing on.

i registered solely to express my extreme disapproval of the crap known as itunes. I never use it, i upload music to my ipod with foobar2000 and yamipod, but I wanted a podcast from itunes because then it has that bookmark feature. So like a retard I opened the crap up, and even though I have manually manage music enabled, AND 'don't sync my music' enabled, itunes decided that it knew best and superceded my preferences. Since I have no music in my itunes library, the program figured, 'well apparently you doesn't like music anymore so i'll just go ahead and delete all those songs you have there on your ipod. thank me later.'

GRRR... Fortunately I have my library backed up on my external, so I just reloaded all of my songs, but this sort of thing is a huge hassle. I hate "idiot proof" software because it makes idiots of all of us who don't want to be led around by the septum ring.

Not asking for advice or help, just ranting. Maybe you've had a similar experience, or maybe you think i'm an idiot. either way thanks for listening

I too am often perplexed as to how Itunes works, altho that's all I use. I'll copy a classical CD into Itunes--say, Lizst, then can't find the CD because instead of it being under "composers" or even "artists" (because often Itunes lists the conductor/pianist, etc instead of composer Lizst) it'll be listed as a Compilation.

Anyway, then you gotta twiddle and tweak with the "info" area of the whole thing. Real pain, BUT whatja gonna do? I've tried the Anapods, mediamonkeys and the like, and still come back to itunes, because overall it's simple. And I LIKE simple

agreed... i mean well, i understand your position. foobar2000, is NOT simple, nor is EAC my cd ripper of choice... but i enjoy the freedom they manage to provide.
