lithium rechargeable 9v batteries

just noticed this. i need some 9v's for my headroom microdac and amp that i intend to purchase shortly. was going to get the maha's, but now i see these on the scene. anyway have thoughts? squeezing an extra hour of daily usage out of my microstack would be wonderful

they say they're actually 9.6v, and considering they have twice the mah of the maha's, this might be fantastic. i'd like to see some reviews though; they seem very new

i spoke to headroom about rechargeables and they said they like the maha's; the question with these is not so much how long they'd last: i'd expect them to last at least 1.5x longer than the maha's, if not 2x; but rather: how much juice will they be putting out? headroom liked the maha's because although they did not have the highest mah, they were true 9.6v, and would give more power out; i'd be worried these might be too frugal on the juice so they could post their 400mah rating.

anyway; if these pan out i'll definitely be picking up 4. i was planning to buy 8 maha's, and carry an extra 4 with me, but this would be much better!!

Got mine today. They're too fat and wide to fit the micro stack. Back they go.

Aside from their large size, here's a further warning about the iPower Lithium-Polymer 9V rechargeables:

Their quality control is extremely poor. Of the original 4 I received, only 1 worked despite many attempted charging cycles. I received 3 replacements, but they are unpredictable. The charger feels flimsy and does not work properly. When placing any of the 7 batteries in the charger, the charge LED immediately goes from red to green, so it is impossible to know when they're charged. Even letting them charge overnight, each gives varying results and results with my battery tester range from zero to acceptable. Only 2 ever showed "good", and none as strong as the Ansmann 9V NIMH rechargeables. 2 of them managed 5.5-6 hours in my Portaphile PV2^2-LT1210 Maxxed with all options on (vs 4.5hrs from Ansmann 250mAh 9v NIMH), but not consistently -- and these sometimes died at 3-4 hours. BTW, 6hrs vs 4.5 for NIMH is good, since their effective capacity is less than 500mAh. Mfr specs: i-Polymer 9V (8.4V) 500mAh, min. 470mAh, (Hi-Rate mode: min. 415mAh).

I'm returning them all to Thomas, who should not be marketing them at all, and would have been aware of their unacceptable quality if they had tested them properly to begin with.

On the slight chance that the charger is to blame for all these issues, I'll allow Thomas Distributing a chance to respond -- but I'd advise against the iPower Li-Po 9Vs.

If anyone is curious, here's the iPowerUS specs page for the Li-Po battery:

Other 9Vs?

Aside from the Maha (230mAH 9V NIMH $9.67), has anyone tried any of the other 9V NIMH batteries that Thomas Distributing carries: ACCUPOWER 270 mAh 9V $7.97, CTA Digital 275mAH 9V $9.97, CTA Digital 225mAH NiMH 9V $6.97, TYSONIC 250 mAh 9V $8.97. I haven't yet found physical dimensions for these and don't know if they fit the MicroAmp/DAC or their quality. I like Ansmann 9V in general, but they're too big and much more costly.

I had a similar experience with these products:

Possible LiPo 9V solution on the way...

I spoke with Brent at Thomas Distributing yesterday (6/19/06) and he said they are aware of the unfortunate problems with the 400mAh iPower LiPo 9Vs. He added that the new 500mAh version that they have now are different, and do not exhibit the problems that plagued the 400mAh batteries. He also said that the problems I experienced with the dedicated charger were due to the faulty batteries and not the charger.

I have 4 new 500mAh iPower LiPo 9Vs coming in a day or 2, and I'll report after a few charge cycles.
