Building Speaker Stands?

Thread Starter
Hi all, I think I would like to make my own speaker stands. I was wondering what I should look for or do or anything to make them good enough to where I won't have to "upgrade" them.

Maybe what wood works best or is there a design that works best, stuff to dampen it, etc. I have no idea what I'm doing really, I just had the thought. So any help will be appreciated.

I made a couple of sets. The pair I like the best was made by using 4 legs from 5/8" threaded rod, painted flat black w/ thick, edge routed wood top and bottom. I couter-sunk the nuts and washers on the top and bottom faces of the stands and the visable nuts and washers used to sandwich the wood is also painted flat black. They take up the same floor space as my speakers did and have a cool industrial look. This is where I got the idea from, (see the enlargements in this link):

TNT audio also has free plans for a great set of speaker stands using pvc pipe and threaded rod. It is dampened by filling the inside of the pvc with play sand. I play to build a pair of these myself in a week or so.

Personally I prefer their Akropolis stands, available at your local home improvement or garden center.

After poorly hacking together a stubby (oh woe is me) I too would recommend an akropolis if you can find one of the appropriate height and figure out how to attach spikes. When you do, pm me!

Attaching spikes shouldn't be too hard. Drill holes into the bottom of the stand, insert masonry anchors, screw spikes into anchors.

Nice tip. Guess it will depend on how thick the base is and I'll probably want to buy a new bit. I may go akropolis hunting in the near future.

Alternative: Go to your local gun store and buy lead buckshot (I may be off on the name, but what I refer is a bag of small lead balls). One you fill the cavity with buckshot, then follow up with sand to fill the voids in the buckshot (shake the stand to get the sand to settle). The lead adds mass.

mass is not as big an issue as my wallet and my back playsand is cheap at $5/bag, heavy enough for me. I will take a guess at how much they weigh when I'm done.
