Oh alright. Il look into that. Thanks for the heads up. And that amp looks solid. Could I use something like that standalone without a dac or soundcard and get good results?

It all depends actually, sound is subjective.

If the digital out on your PC is really bad(has lots of noise and other unwanted sounds) then you might need a DAC. Get the amo you want first, then when you use it if you hear anything weird then get your DAC. Alternatively you could get a DAC/Amp all in one box, like the Fiio E10

Have you considered the the soundMagic HP200, open back headphone over the ear, very comfy and big. Also has a very nice signature and sound stage from what I hear similar to the 650 with tighter bass and clearer highs. I do not know how accurate the reviews are though. I was going to grab either that or the 990 pro. I am hopefully getting the closed version of the soundMagic HP100 this weekend.

I have a couple of questions for the DT-990s that I currently own, if you do not mind me asking:

My first question is do they perform well for orchestra music, such as the soundtrack music for SW & the LOTR movies? I really like hearing the background music from these films and I am not sure if the DT-990s are well suited for that duty. I know they are excellent for gaming/movies but I am looking to expand to orchestrated music.

Second, what would be a good dedicated headphone amplifier that would complement the DT-990s? I have the SB Z sound card but I find the volume to be a bit low, and at 75-85% on the SB Z software is where it tends to sound at a "normal" level. I am looking at a price range around $100-$250.

Thanks.

I seem to have encountered a very strange problem with my DT990 Pros. I have no idea how it could have started, but I realized last night that the right earcup was closer to the ear than the left, and it is so extremely annoying. The left earcup is nice and raised off the ear due to the padding but the right ear's padding seems to softer/weaker and closer to the ear. Is there anything I can do to help this issue? And yes, it happens no matter how I adjust the cups, whether I make one cup lower/higher or adjust them equally. If I "broke in" the left earcup so that they both conform to my head more in the fashion of the right, would this negatively effect soundstage noticeably?

Sounds like one of the pads has compressed more than the other. A new set of pads should do it.

Alright, thanks. Replacement pads are only about $25 so I will pick some up soon if I can't get the left pad to compress as well. What makes me so curious though is that this issue popped up out of nowhere and I've only had the headphones for a week!

I have been actively searching the forums for an appropriate headphone amp for the DT-990s but it seems like there is no consensus for a favorite. All various brands and models were mentioned in my search results.

I know an amp that would slightly soften the highs/sibilance would be one of my contenders.

Try a tube amp, like one of the Bravo audio ones, or maybe a Little Dot model(I have no experience with these though).

Thanks, I will do some research on these amps. The Bravo Audio Ocean may work. I have never used such an amp before so are they easy to install?

One more question if you do not mind me asking: How do these amps compare to the Schiit amps in terms of SQ, reliability, and build quality? They seem to be very popular on Head-Fi.

There's no installation required, you just plug it in to an audio output and power, and that's it.

Ah, that is good. I was not sure since I never had such a device before.

Here are the amps I am considering atm:

Solid-State: JDS Labs O2, Schiit Asgard 2, Schiit Magni, and Fiio EO9K

Tube: Bravo Audio Ocean and Little Dot MK II.

So many choices. It is tough for a me  to tell which one will the best since I am a newbie.

This sounds even better in FLAC-True Lossless format on 250ohm DT-990s. You can find the whole album on a torrent file sharing site,...

Favorites are Final Fantasy VII - One Winged Angel, Chrono Trigger - Main Theme, Luigi's Mansion - Main Theme, Batman Arkham City - Main Theme, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Fate of the Unknown.
