DIY HD580 Cable Replacement

Thread Starter
Are there any members who make / sell HD580 cable replacements? The "off the shelf" replacement cables from Cardas, etc. seem too expensive to me.

Thanks!

Have you looked at stock HD-650 cables?

I'm not sure you'll find DIY cables to be significantly cheaper. As far as I understand, it's quite a tricky job to make senn. cables, so is expensive for the DIY'ers to make.

DIY senn cables will generally have a price up there for several reasons,

Cost of materials, amount of time and labor involved.

The senn cables require the most amount of labor and patience out of every cable Ive built. It takes me about a whole day just for that one cable, then a few more days to run it through its tests.

I agree, go the stock HD-650.

It's only tough if you're trying to solder directly to the pins, but you can save a great deal of hassle by keeping a few inches of the stock cable, sparing the connectors. I did a set like this for my father's 600s with some Canare Quad for the bulk of the cord. He's happy with it and the construction is still very durable.

Star quad was a bit bulky for my tastes, I recabled my Grados with them and I didnt like how heavy the cable was. If youd like to use star quad, you should check out the Cardas cables, which is a more flexible and lighter shielded sterquad cable.

If you consider how much wire goes into a senn cable, that would also be a good reason why the senn cables are so expensive. When I build a 7' cable I end up using 28 feet of wire. 28 feet of wire is very expensive, compared to an 8" cable that uses 2.5'.
