Grados

Thread Starter
I currently have a pair of sennheiser HD437 and i'm looking another set of headphones, but i'm not planning spending more than 100$. I've been looking for the grado SR60 but i'm wondering if should really pay and get the SR80 ?
And i would also want to know if both of these headphones run great with an ipod?
Thanks a lot!

Either one works well with an iPod. You don't need an amp. Some people like the extra bass that the 80s give you, but a lot of people prefer the more natural sound of the 60s. You'll just have to decide which you prefer.

I really stress the importance of listening to a set of Grados before you purchase. Some people really do not like how harsh they can be.

However, with this said, If you like the Grado signature you can't go wrong with either the SR-60 or 80. They both will rock without an amp, and will sound even better when you amp them. (If you have intention of amping them eventually, my personal opinion is to get the 80's.)

If you would like most of this Grado goodness, but find the sound a little too harsh, you can always look at the Allesandro MS-1. At $100 it is a nice compromise to achieve that wonderful Grado bliss.

i cant say enough good things about my sr80's

and another thing, you get the bowls when you buy the 80's (comfies suck! IMO)

If you're not planning on using an amp stick with the SR-60. The SR-80 can sound worse than the SR-60 unamped.

i disagree, the sr80 is just as easy to drive as the 60,
if you can afford it go with the 80 over the 60

I've listened to both extensively side by side unamped, and the SR-60 sounded better. Not by a huge amount but it did sound better. The bass on the SR-80 is very muddy and uncontrolled without an amp, theres a few other discrepencies but thats the major downfall.

Out of even an average amp the SR-80 surpass the SR-60 (this is using both out of a pimeta, and my current maxed M3)

But this being Headfi, I'll recommend a used SR-225 (which can be had for around $120-130 since the HF-1 came out). IMO this is a big leap above the SR-60 and SR-80

I'd go for MS-1s. They are just at your $100 limit and are better than SR-80s in many ways.

This is a debate like Ford vs. Chevy.
