High quality 2 to 4 outlet power conditoner? - Page 2

Trogdor - I used to use an Audio Power Industries Power Wedge 116 in my main rig, but, found the isolation transformers didn't allow me the flexibility of playing with parallel filtering. I shifted the API conditioner over to my headphone rig which has less demands than the he-man setup. In conjunction with a high current version of the PS Audio UO, I seem to be getting pleasing results with my headphone gear.

For what it's worth, I second Salt Peanuts' recommendation of the PS Audio UPC-200. It seems like it suits your needs, and if I were in your shoes again, I'd consider checking it out. I use a PS Audio Power Port, Power Director 4.7, and xStream Statement cords on all the components in my main rig (except turntable motor) with reeeeally wonderful results - the PS Audio gear has raised the enjoyment factor on my main system a huge notch - the spatial relationships between instruments (and their timbre) is far clearer than without this level of conditioning. The PS Audio UPC-200 is kind of the evolutionary successor to the UO, and I imagine its performance to be no less than the stuff I'm using, if not better.

I know people with some Shunyata gear and they're pleased with the results. I hope to check it out myself at some point. A concern with power conditioners in general is that you want to avoid current limiting. Fortunately, as far as I know, the PS Audio and Shunyata gear don't suffer this constriction.

Thanks guys

Wow, yeah the UPC-200 looks like something I should really consider considering its the same price as the Shunyata stuff and has two UO inside as Salt Peanuts mentioned.

I'm cautious of Monster because their focus is home theater not high-end audio (especially 2-channel). But with that said, a lot of people around here seem to have some level of success using their power conditioning stuff.

Hmmm....looks like the UPC-200 or the Shunyata Research stuff. At least with the UPC-200, you don't need a special power chord (uggh).

Trogdor - in case you haven't done it, make sure to check out Audiogon if you don't mind getting it used. I see UPC-200 up for sale on 'Gon for between $340-400 all the time. I've been thinking about picking one up, but I have to wait till my wallet recovers from my recent purchases.

Nobody?
I had/have a Monster AVS2000 (I think) that didn't do much for my audio system as far as noise went (dimmer switch nearby). It is now relegated to the TV/DVD etc. I replaced it with a Brickwall 8 outlet audio unit which does a very nice job.

Richard Marsh supposedly designed the Monster power stuff... he also designed the March amps/preamps... the Marsh A400 power amp did not work well in my system (my Hafler DH220 at the time trounced it). I don't know how the current Monster stuff performs as I wasn't going there again, but I see them in use in what passes for hi-fi/home theatre stores these days. Of course they also sell them .

Go for one of those rackmount APCs. (*Not* the cheap units, the big rackmounts.) I have seen those used in over 90% of all data centers, so let that be an indication of how good those units are. Be sure that it has true sine wave output.

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

My buddy has a Brickwall and loves it, PERIOD. I was going to go for that but landed a fantastic deal on the PS Audio UPC-200 which I think will do the trick. We shall see.

Great, the ultimate Ultimate Outlet! (how fantastic?)

I would recommend one of the Shunyata Hydra 4's over any of the similar passive PS Audio units I have tried (UO etc).........new Shunyata Hydras are very high quality, sound great and sell at very little discount used if you ever see one (which speaks volumes about how they sound). Look at all the PS Audio UO and UPC200 for sale at Audiogon at big discounts, Hydra 4 costs a little more but a real quality piece of audio gear that will hold its value.

One thing to keep in mind Hydra requires AC cord with 20 amp female end.

I also owned Brickwall briefly......the Shunyata is in a completely higher class of AC conditioning. Noticeably clearer, more detailed and open sounding in my systems.

I hoping to get the hydra 8 in jan. or feb. I can't wait to hear it in my system. From what I have read I should be getting a nice step up in sound quality. First I need to get a rack. I think I'm settled on one of the mapleshade samson racks.

Just an FYI, the reason for separate conditioners between digital and analog gear is contamination from the digital equipment's rectifiers. The AC-DC converter tends to back wash some dirty noise and possibly some DC current into the AC feed. The larger conditioners out there have dedicated digital outlets that take an extra step to filter out the backwash. I currently use a Furman voltage regulator and isolation transformer, which of course is about 70 lbs. of gear so it doesn't fulfill your need. I've used the PS Audio Ultimate Outlet with lots of luck on amplifiers in the past. I would have to imagine the Shunyata stuff is excellent as well. It's important to remember though that it's not the conditioner that has the limitation of using both analog and digital gear on it.
