Should I upgrade?

Hey, I'm a complete noob to headphones. All I know is that Sennheiser seems to be the #1 maker of mainstream heaphones from what I can tell. Anyways....

I've been using my dad's old pair of sony headphones... model... MDR-V6

Thats what they look like... Retails for about 70 bucks now. They are really worn out, I've had to put the foam back in every now and then, and arn't very comfortable anymore.

So. I'm thinking it may be worth the upgrade. I'm looking to spend 50-80. They will be used for mainly gaming and music (rock, alternative, rap) at night.

But yeah, would it be worth the upgrade from what I have in terms of sound quality ALONE? I would be willing to try and pick up a used pair someone, perhaps on a for sale/trade forum. I saw a pair of HD555's for $95...

If you can get some 555' used, go for it-great starter.
Otherwise, id get some px100 which IMO, are an exceptional pair of headphones for the price.

Well, I mean, the 555's were just one that I just happened to see. Are there better ones for the price? What is just below that? Also - at what point would upgrading not be worth the cost in terms of sound quality alone vs the MDR-V6's I have now?

By the way, the headphones will be hooked up to my computer, audigy 2>z-5500's>headphones. I'm a complete noob, but noticed that if i turn the volume on the z-5500's to max and the system volume low to counter act that, my headphones can handle much more bass...

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet

my main objection with the sonys is the lack of soundstage. If you want an upgrade in that area, then sure no problem. If you're looking for something else, then I'm not sure if much exists in the same price range that's really an upgrade. I mean, get grados or something, but I'd hardly consider something like the sr60s an upgrade from what you have now. If you have the chance, try out akg 240S - they sound completely different from the V6s.

I think the problem is - I'm not sure what is out there. I've never heard decent headphones... These headphones just don't impress me at all, but maybe its just the source materal... I'm not sure.

Oh, and they would be for mainly rock music, some rap.. and everything else.

For that style of music, you might want to check out the Grado SR-60.

Agreed, or maybe save up for a pricier headphone. The Sony V6 is not a bad pair of cans, and the Grado will be somewhat of an upgrade but not a huge one.

if they don't impress you, then perhaps you're looking for a different kind of sound. The sonys are relatively flat so I doubt it's the frequency response. Try senns of akgs. You'll get more of the same with grados - like you're right on stage with the sounds coming from beside you.

Please don't do that, for your ear's sake. Plug the headphones to the source with no signal degradation in the path. The headphone-out in consumer products and especially desktop speakers is utter crap. No wonder you notice hearable changes in sound. And by the way, the quality of the bass is judged primarily by control and extension, not flabbying amounts.

Anyway, welcome to head-fi. And sorry about your wallet, I haven't believed that either.
