Hi there...

Owner of Sony MDR CD1700 headphone, I'm looking for an THE amp to use with.
The source is a Thule CD100 and I listen mostly rock and electro.
$400 is the max I can spend for it.

So, the poor newbie I am beg your advice, PLEEEEAAASE.

Thanks

contact jmt and have him custom build one for you. let him know what phones you use and he'll adjust the gain accordingly. i have his inexpensive cha47 and get much much more enjoyment out of it than i should for what i paid for it.

Well, of those I've heard, THE amp to get for the CD1700 would be the Sugden Headmaster, but that's a bit over your budget. That being the case, IMO, Redshifter's advice is excellent. The CD1700s sound great with a CHA47 and even better with a META42. I'm sure JMT or the other Head-Fiers, Tangent and Eric, could tailor an amp to suit your needs. I much prefer these DIY amps to the Total Airhead, Creek OBH-11, or MG Head with the CD1700s. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your replies.

OK, so the Meta42 seems to be a good choice, although IMO it lacks a crossfeed. Is it possible to add a DIY crossdfeed to the Meta42?

Sure.
If you are going to build it yourself ask around in the DIY section for better details.
If you are getting someone else to do it them just ask them about adding x-feed. The only thing about x-feed is that with the current design board of the Meta they made no room for it, so a separate board is needed for it. No problem unless you want a really small case.
