What are the sonic differences between a DT770/80 & 250/80?

As I need a decent closed cans ( oxymoron alert! ), I appreciate a feedback from someone who listened or owned both cans.

R10 seems to be the cat's mew but I have no way of auditioning so they are out.
I wasn't too keen on a W2002 but will try to borrow a pair again to see if they work with a Headline2.

I do not have much of high hope for closed cans, but what are the decent ones out there?

Also, how do the 990s compare to the other 880s and 770s?

A 880 is not a closed can.
I've forgotten about the 990 but these are high impedance cans, aren't they?

Hmmm - DT990 is semi-open, not closed. And I'm not much of a fan for the DT250/80 - I'd rather recommend to look into the DT250/250, which is only a tad less efficient, but sounds a lot better...

Thanks lini,

Interesting that there is a difference between high/low impedance versions. Which amp did you use?

In what area a 250/250 excells over the 80 ohms version?

Any experience on a 770?
Makes me wonder if the higher impedance version is better.

What exactly did you like better about the DT250/250 over the DT250/80? I'm looking for a slightly warmer presentation than the 250/250, and was hoping that the 250/80 would fit that requirement....

Oh, well - I'm not sure whether impedance is the only difference. Could just as well be older design/newer design...

Several (Porta)Cordas, integrated amp, surround receiver, direct connections to several soundcards....

DT250/80 seems to have more (upper) midrange/lower treble to my ears, but practically no sparkle/brilliance. And it's also a bit less extended in the bass department. All in all, the DT250/80 sounds rather dry, a bit like the AKG K240DF. I'd probably recommend the DT250/80 for voice monitoring - but for music listening the DT250/250 seems a lot better to me.

Only with the DT770Pro/250 - for my taste, that thing produces too much bass which in addition feels rather weird. Not my cup of tea. Never heard the DT770/80 though - sorry...

It is. At least in the case of DT250/80 vs. DT250/250. But it's supposed to be the other way round with the DT770s, iirc.

darn it, Lini! You know the 531's are discontinued and hard to come by nowadays! I could put a post out looking for a pair, but people have been jacking the price up on them used..

Any other recommendations in the Beyer lineup, or should I perhaps give the 250-250's another chance? I gave them maybe about 60-80 hours of burn-in before. Seriously, Lini, I consider your advice on the Beyer lineup to be very valuable...

I might give a 250/250 a shot. An overblown bass you've mentioned on the 770 does not sound appealing.

Even though, I wasn't too keen on the DT880 (too boring ), since I like their DT931,( but they are semi-open ), I am curious about their sealed cans.

Interesting you compare the 250/80 to the AKG.
I've got the K271 and this seems to be working well with warmish Headline and LP12. I am having a bit of a tough time with the vice grip around the headband. I found them not as comfortable as Music Pro or RS1. Altho this might be a nature of all closed cans.

They certainly do not sound like Grado, but it's not half bad as I expected.
But a 250/250 might flesh out better?

appar111: No worries, I was mostly joking with the DT531 - if anything, the highs will stand out even more compared to the DT250/250, 'cause the DT531 is less present in the upper midrange/lower treble. On the other hand, if it's the slight nasality of the DT250/250 (compared to the DT531) that disturbs you, the DT531 could work for you. Difficult to foresee... Btw, have you ever tried the Senn HD 580 or HD 650? And what about the HD 595?

perhaps it was the slight nasality of the 250-250. Is the 250-80 the same in that regard?

also, is $160 shipped for a brand spankin' new old stock pair of DT531's a good deal? It seems to be, as it's only about $7 more than what a new pair of DT250's (either 80 or 250 ohm) would cost me from bhphotovideo.com.

Lastly, how does the DT531 do unamped? I know an amp would help, but is it a must? I know that the K240S I've been using doesn't need one to sound good.
