the problem is the stiffness of a truck or suv frame, there design to handle towing, offroading, heavy loads, there stronger and stiffer then a cars frame, hence they don't fold up like an accordian in an accident like a car does, which absorbs much of the energy, reducing the instantaneous change in accerelation of the passengers in a car, where an suv leaves the people to deal with the brunt of the force in an accident
that and the higher center of gravity lead to suv's being far unsafer then cars, but the fact is they aren't as safe as a car
and blessing, its even worse now, last year death rates for cars went down, rates for SUV's went up something like 5-10% in each direction
