Real leather will eventually dry out and crack so needs periodic maintainance and for any leather goods you can't beat mink oil.
Pop the leather off and work the prodcut in with your thumbs and first finger and disregard any directions of the packaging about using a rag.Your skin IS leather (or would be if you were skinned

) so it is two natural surfaces using a natural subtances working together with the addition of your body temp actually working the oils deeper into the leather.
After you work the oil in remove any excess with a
clean cotton natural cotton cloth (t-shirt perfect). You will nmost likely see a lot of crap on the cloth and this is all the crud that floats around in the open air and settling on the surface coming off
Repeat step #1 and #2 until you have a clean white cloth then buff the pads with that cloth until you get a nice sheen.
Not all "leather pads" are actually leather so be absolutley sure they are bfore applying mink oil to them or you will end up with a mess !
For "artificial leather" vinyl pads use Armour All automotive products to clean and protec the pads instead
