Frustrated and Confused

Thread Starter
Okay, I'm getting an iRiver H10 5gb for Christmas right. Well I have no clue how the supplied headphones are and if they are bad I want some decent headphones that aren't going to cost an arm and a leg. However, I rarely use headphones and so I know like, nothing about them and I've tried researching and I'm terribly confused.

I want a pair of earbuds (the little ones that go in your ear that are like, not noticeable) that are comfortable, atleast somewhat. That provide decent sound (I don't care if the bass is superheavy or whatever) and that cost under $50.

I'm not looking for awesome amazing, 'the best', I just want to be able to hear my music and have it sound decent.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Look into the Sennheiser MX500. Well respected cheap earbud.

mx-400's aren't that bad but i find them uncomfortable. i'd go with creative ep-630's or sharp md-33's. They sound better, are more comfortable and isolate better.

in holland you can get the ep-630's for only 25 euro so they aren't too expensive

The bass on the mx400 is a joke, I've hardly used mine.

Go for the ep630's, got 'em, love 'em...

You can probably find the Etymotic ER6i, pretty cheap, they can be had for about $77, but the extra you spend, will be really worth it. Just a suggestion!

Earbuds in the $40-50 range, Sony MDR-E888LP is it. I find the Sony more comfortable than the MX500.

Welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet.

Consider:
Do you really want good sound/fit/isolation--> go for the shure e2c--> at around $60 there "only" $10 above your budget and the best buy in that range in my opinion.
If you want to stay under the $50 you should follow the above advices.

P.S.
You guys were pretty late with saying: 'sorry for your wallet'

I suggest that you listen to headphones that come with the player first. You just might like them for now. And if you don't, you will have a better idea of what is missing and can start looking for headphones that address those specific problems.

I also have an iRiver. The earbuds that come with it are actually not Sennheisers, even though they look very much like them. Rather, they're a Korean brand called "Cresyn". To be honest, if you want to stick with earbuds (as opposed to in-ears like the Shure E2 for instance), then try first the ones that come with your iRiver. They're actually quite good, especially in the bass department. I always find earbuds a bit uncomfortable, and they never seem to fit me right, but if they fir you, give them a go. They are certainly much superior tp the Apple earbuds that came with my iPod for instance. Otherwiese, if you feel that you still want to upgrade, i'd go with the Sony 888 earbuds. Don't forget in that case to check some thread in this forum about them (the Sony 888) because there's a simple mod you can do that apparently makes them sound even better. The next step-up from there (price-wise at least) would be the Shure E2c or E2G. The Shure E2G are black and quite funky-looking (don't be put-off by the fact that they're advertized for gaming - hence the "G". They apparently sound the same as the E2C). You might also want to consider the Etymotic ER6i. They're not that far-off price-wise from the Shure E2C/G, and they're known to have a more precise sound, although at the expense of bass (at least compared to the Shure E2/G). Depends what you're listening to... For Shure and Etymotic, check out EarphoneSolutions: http://store.earphonesolutions.com. Not sure about the Sony 888 though...Maybe ebay?

A.
