Dvorak New World Symphony, holy crap! - Page 2

Mahler is absolutely nothing like Dvorak's New World Symphony! Why do people keep recommending Mahler to classical newbies? Recommend Slavonic Dances or Brahms' Hungarian Rhapsodies or Schubert's Unfinished... Recommending Mahler is a good way to kill the spark in a new classical listener. Try some of the other SACDs in that series Cloud. You won't be disappointed. In particular, try the Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition.

See ya

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Try the Sibelius, Schubert & Brahms symphonies. Mahler's 1st and 5th would be good starting points.

Oh, and you've at least made one listen to all of Beethoven's symphonies, right?

Welcome to a wonderful world of Music, sorry about your wallet. My encyclopedia of classical music lists about 45,000 works, so you should find many others that you like.

As for Dvorak can I give a shameless plug to the Brilliant Classics Masterworks Box set for Dvorak - 40Cds for about $75, all his major works.

As for Mahler, I would venture to agree with Bigshot that he is a little less accessible at first - and I am a great fan of Mahler, 4 is however quite jolly and relatively short. If you like bombastic music you could try Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches.

Kubelik is definitely the man, on the Symphonies & Overtures.

Be sure and check out some of the Dvorak chamber music as well.

So what instrument do you play? The bassoon parts are a heck of a lot of fun...

Hey, thanks for the reminder. I've got the Solti/Chicago Symphony Orch. version on London. Haven't listened in a while, fixing that right now.
