I like the Bach Cantatas, other suggestions?

I have really gotten into my friends collection of J.S. Bach 2000 Cantatas collection (There is a ton of it, takes up 4gb on my ipod )

I don't know the correct terminology, but I really like the chamber or choir music, especially the parts in the music where a large number of people are singing.

Since I really don't know much about this sort of music, it makes it hard to search for. I want something similiar but less organs and a different style, perhaps from a different time period. Any language is good, I like the German though.

Try Orff's "Carmina Burana".

Another two worth of a try:
- Buxtehude's Cantatas
- Schütz: Try the Weihnatch-Historie or the Symphoniae Sacrae. It's vocal music sung in latin and german with an italian 'mood'.

-Handel's Messiah, cantatas, operas
-Bach's Matthaus Passion

Where have you been? Use the handy search button for this forum and you will find numerous cantata recommendations.

In addition, there are threads dedicated to oratorios of other composers such as Handel's Messiah, Requiems, masses and Stabat Maters.

These threads are very recent so the suggestions listed should really do the trick.

I used the search, but I'm classic, past music illiterate. I did find the Goldberg site, and that helped some.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I actually went to Handel's Messiah last christmas and heard the Kansas City Orchestra perform it, pretty cool stuff.

I second this recommendation. There is an excellent thread on the Messiah, and I recommend the Gardiner recording without reservation. In fairness, though, I have to say that I am not as enamored with the Messiah as other works by other composers.

As to the Matthaeus-Passion, the Gardiner recording is my personal favorite. He also did a fine Johannes-Passion. This work is a bit more daunting than the Messiah, but is very rewarding.

If you like big choral pieces, I think that these two works will provide fodder for happy listening for some time.

I have two ideas for you (both German language):

Schubert -- Lieder
Mahler -- Das Lied von der Erde and Songs of Youth

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to Library tomorrow to check it all out. I currently am listening to the Orff's Carmina Burana and LOVE it. It is probably my favorite so far. The quality of what I have is lacking though, a lot of fuzz and static in the background.

I definitly want to buy a Carmina Burana Album, but I don't know which version to get. Any suggestions. I will let you know what I think of the the others once I listen to them.

Oh btw, when I listened to O fortuna, I was like "HEY, I've heard that before."

Man I feel like a n00b.

The version that I have, and like, is Eugen Jochum's 1968 Deutschen Oper Berlin recording with Janowitz, Stolze, and Fischer-Dieskau on Deutsche Grammophon.

Just some of my favourites, and YMMV

Haydn's Masses. The Heiligmesse and Mass in Time of War (Paukenmesse) is a good place to start. Also the Te Deum for Empress Marie Therese, Hob. XXIIIc2 is a personal favourite. I think a 5 disc set of most, if not all of Haydn's Masses exists, conducted by Bruno Weil and Tafelmusik/OoAOE with the Tolzer Knabenchor. They're also available individually on Sony's Vivarte Series.

Mozart's Coronation Mass K.317, Requiem K.626. I don't like Karajan's recordings, but you can always pick one up for variety if you like it s...l...o...w. One Requiem I enjoyed was this one, again with the Tolzer Knabenchor.

Schubert's Masses, the Mass In F Major D.105, and Mass in G Major D.167 are rather easy to listen to. (It's cheap too heh) I snagged
this disc off Ebay.

Bach's Christmas Oratorio. A nice recording already exists in the Bach 2000 series, just go hunt for it. The Mass in B minor too.

You might enjoy some Palestrina too, but get through the more 'modern' works first lol

I prefer the sound of boy choirs to adult choirs, so my recordings are skewed towards them. But the Bach 2000 collection uses boy choirs for the Cantata recordings, so if you didn't dislike them right away than it should be palatable.

And lastly, you're damn lucky for having access to the Bach 2000 set. I'm trying to save $$$ for it . . . but it'd probably be unavailable by the time i have enough lol.

I will check those out. Thanks once again.

If you want to save money, and I don't suggest anything illegal, try the library if you have a good one.

My friend who is a jazz fanatic (I never got into it) was able to find everything he could ever want at our local library. From there he was able to determine what cd's he wanted bad enough to purchase.

It can be very dissappointing buying an album only to find out you dislike the recording. Or if it doesn't not include a certain part of a piece that you were looking for.

Haha, I had access to a particularly large classical collection in a library in my home country. You have to pay a small sum a year to be able to loan the CDs out (you can still browse them within the library for free though). Borrowed around 160+ titles and ahem . . .

But yup, if you want a particular recording of a work you still have to purchase them, but the library was instrumental in pointing me in the right direction

Here is the list that I made based on recommendations, it's a little sloppy.

Tell me if I am missing anything major here. I had to make this a crappy text file because my word file was too big. Sorry.
