slight miscommunication-no worries mate
im not TRYING to like anything...but, from experience, there are alot of bands that I didnt like for at least the first 4-5 listens-but now I love them b/c I "persevered". I feel like thats what you have to do with complex (especially prog) music.
Granted, if I dont like them, I dont like them.
The point of this thread was for others to share their initial experiences with DT, and maybe offer some advice on other more accessible albums to start with/try.

I pretty much had the same problem with DT

bought 2 CDs (Awake, Images and Words)

only liked one track, hated the vocals ... didnt get the feel

sold the CDs

bought something else

I suggest giving Ayreon a shot as well.

you can always check out Falling Into Infinity. it gets lots of crap, but most of it isn't really justified. granted, FII isn't their strongest work as an album, but it's home to some of their greatest songs (New Millennium, Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand, and Trial of Tears).

I am a prog rock fan mainly with the likes of Yes, King Crimson, etc....and I find that most modern prog teams like DT, Liquid Tension Experiment stuff, Bozzio Levin stevens sterile....

The guys obviously have chops galore...but many of the songs dont have any melodic meat at all....its a conglomeration of riffs and ideas that end up being quite disjointed in the end...

That being said,,,I find it unlistenable when compared to the masters like KC, Yes, Focus and others.....too many notes played, not enough melody.

Its the same with most..Vai, Morse, and most others...the tremendous creativity and ability to craft and arrange just isnt remotely there...

Yeah I got the same problem as the first poster. Tried it hard, bought different cd's. Listened to them for hours, but still didn't like them (the voice of the singer)

I dont find them very musical at all. Some people find that hard to understand, but usually theyre saying something "they were top of their class at the best music school in the world" or something.
Doesnt mean jack **** to me, Technical Stuff doesnt really make me go oooh and aahh. I fail to find them musical.

I have tried, and tried, and really tried some more to like DT. Yet, only when lampooned / harpooned by Zappa can I find any redeeming qualities. 'Why Does It Hurt When I Pee' (Joe's Garage) is a prime example.

I'm a fan of Dream Theater (or rather, the two CDs I have of them) and find them very enjoyable to listen to, however, I think it's pretty understandable if you don't like them. SFAM is a great CD by them IMHO, if you don't like that, you probably don't like them in general.

This is why I love Tool; all the metal goodness without the cheesiness.

I agree... this is their main fault, especially for me, since after listening to Victor Wooten i realized that it is possible for a musician to be technical without losing the fun of the music...

I can't get into Dream Theatre either. I have a few of their releases, but they just don't get a lot of playtime. I find that they just aren't very good songwriters. Sure, they are excellent musicians, I'll give them that -- but I really just can't end up appreciating their composition practices. That said, they've done some brilliant cover work, but I'd rather hear their creative music over Dark Side of the Moon in 11/8 time...

You dont like their music but youd rather hear their "creative music" over DSOTM in 11/8...not sure I understand what that means... (whats 11/8?-and why would you want to hear them if you dont like them???)

Anyways...was wondering...if I dont like DT will I not like KC?
Ive neaver heard anything by them-and would like to test them out.
I think im beginning to realize that I like prog-rock and not prog-metal. Never was much of a metal-head to begin with, but do love Metallica and adore TOOL-although i wouldnt classify them as metal.
I think this is why I like RUSH so much...pure, classic prog-rock.

DT and KC do not have much immediately in common. either way, you should never be hesitant to listen to new music just because you heard one band in a given genre that you couldn't get in to. especially when you get into the world of atypical music.. artists become very different, even within the same genre.

regarding Tool.. you wouldn't classify them as metal? what? their early output was straight grindcore and thrash metal.. while their later work was/is metal with prog aesthetic and art rock leanings.

So, somebody's a little musically uninclined, huh?

11/8 is a time signature. It means there are 11 8th notes in a measure. It's a very complex form of time, and is very rarely used - though most notably used in 'technical metal'.

What I was getting at with the 'creative' music aspect is that Dream Theatre would make a great cover band, as I mentioned. However, I'd rather hear their own music over renditions of previous works - but Dream Theatre, for me, just doesn't utilize their talents well enough for me to consider listening to them more than once. I'd dream to be as good as Mike Portnoy, which is a start, but as a band, Dream Theatre doesn't entertain for me.
