Why cant I get into Dream Theater?

Ive tried, hard.
So mant people love these guys around here-Im just not feeling it.
The music is definately impressive; there is no doubt these guys are immensely talented. However, (and please, no one take nay offense to this) their sound has this cheesy, metal edge to it that I just cant get past.
I started with Train Of Thought, which has so many Pantera riffs and Metallica rip-offs in it that it really just bothered me.
I decide to get SFAM, which everyone praises...i can understand why it garners all those positive reveiws but I cant get passed that one point.
I was so excited to get into these guys.
Should I try any other albums?
I have a very open mind when it comes to music...maybe I should just keep listening?
Also, I ordered Porcupine Tree "In Absentia" and an Opeth album; if I dislike DT will I have the same response to these bands.
I happen to LOVE Rush, so I figured this would be the natural progression.
Maybe Ill give it a couple more listens.

Don't worry about it. Not everyone has the same taste, even if they like many of the same albums.

My top "why can't I get into ___" is Radiohead.

If you find metal cheesy, then there isn't much for you to be able to tolerate with DT. If it's the vocals you don't like, try the Liquid Tension Experiment CD's, featuring the main two instrumentalists of DT, and two other excellent ones. A friend of mine who doesn't like metal likes them. Other than that, just get DT's instrumental songs somehow , because all but a few of their songs have metal tendancies somewhere in them.

Yeah the cheesy metal vibe got to me too. For a while I really liked DT just because of the impressive playing.

Porcupine Tree is a totally different story. They lean a little more toward the Radiohead vibe with a little prog and In Absentia even sounds like Tool in some places. In absentia has a few clunker tracks IMO. Definitely explore the rest of their catalog if songs like Trains, Gravity Eyelids, .7, or Heartattack in a Layby grab your interest. The "metal" sound of In Absentia was fairly new to the PT sound and is continued on Deadwing.

Opeth is hard enough to escape the cheesy metal category. Whether you can get past the death metal vocals is another thing.

..tried "A change of season" ?
give it a try ..

I could never get into DT either, to me they sounded like Rush on steriods.

I also never really liked Opeth, the dying polar bear vocals just make me want to bash my head into a wall.

I would definitely suggest some others easy starting points .. my 2c and my exp. .
the first track of " six degrees of inner turbolence " ; " a change of season " ; to name a whole album that's easy DT and easy on ears , "Awake" . And if you find it @ few bucks , " Images and Words " album too .

I higly doubt you can't find anything good if you give a chance to these options .

"Endless Sacrifice" on TOT sounds oddly familiar to Metallicas' Sanitarium.
Agree?

I wouldn't start off with TOT if I had to get into DT , really

Because evry song of theirs is a self-indulged wankfest of how incredibly technical they can be. I admit they are good musicians, but they make everything way too complex and play beyond the music, if that's understandable.

At least this has always been my opinion of them. To each his own, but I don't see my self getting into them much ever. Just one man's opinion, take it for what it's worth...

That’s ok if you don't like it. I personally love SFAM and other Dream Theater material. I would listen to it all the time if I could. I think they are very talented and exciting granted they embellish a little too much at times.

However Radiohead is another story. I think it is crap. The instrumentals are ok for the most part but as soon as he starts singing it goes downhill. He sounds like some whinny kid that won't get of his ******* *** and do something about it. There is no innocence or deepness about it. Which might sound kind of odd because I really like Belle And Sebastian. I see him an innocent nerd but Radiohead seems like a bunch of whiners. I don’t care if everybody praises them.

My two cents. In other words that's cool you don't like DT.

I have to disagree with this ... DT are just like another band , with techn. ability and soul too .
Maybe , as in many other things , when compositions are complex / eclectic / different in and among them and in many ways , then it's bit more difficult to get into them and to recollect a coherent idea about them . This doesn't necessary means nothing though , bar the fact that we like / we don't like a piece .

It happens to me lots of time to discover a modern classic composer after a time , just becaue I wasn't ready to comprehend at first sight it doesn't mean it doesn't deserve comprehension .. any artist generally speaking works on inspiration , so it's difficult that art becomes merely mechanic , more easily we are not able to understand what's in or behind . But this is another long story . so going take a beer now .

people are gonna start flaming you for not liking radiohead...not really. it's cool. but same deal with some of the mars volta threads that we had going on here. like, if you don't dig 'em, then you don't. i had a friend who tried to really get into thursday, but absolutely hated the singer, and i don't blame her. it's cool that you try and support the band, but if you don't, then don't because everyone else is doing it.
the ytze jam from dream theater is still awesome though.

I tried, but I found Radiohead just be plain boring. Ah well.
