Hliðskjálf by Burzum - Ambient

I just found one of my new favorite ambient albums. It is kind of tricky to find because it has other spellings because it is translated. It is also commonly named Hlidskjalf. The music is very dark but expresses many different emotions.

That is all good and fine but I find the back-story enriches it in countless ways. This album was created solely by Varg Vikernes. Also know as Count Grishnackh. He created this whole album in prison and was played by him completely on a synthesizer. He stabbed to death a former band member in 1993 and attempted arson of a number of churches. He was formally in a black metal band but his imprisonment has turned him more into ambient type music. He is also a member of the White Aryan Resistance and is a Neo-Nazi. He is Anti-Christian and instead he has Pagan and Norse mythical views.

Just thinking about the source of the music coming from a murder, a racist, and a very warped man added to the fact that I can’t help imagining this music coming from a dungeon, this just finishes the experience for me. The only problem is that is is only 33 minutes.

P.S. I don’t condone his views, I just like the music.

I love Filosofem and most of his music post metal. The guy strikes me as a contradiction: Too smart and talented to be a racist prick. Anyway, I would love to have a chance to interview him.

Even if he is a prick, I can't help being entranced by the music. There are a few things that he wrote and two interviews at: http://www.burzum.org/eng/library/

I only have 1st three black metal albums recently reissued as cool digipaks:

Burzum - Burzum/Aske
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Don't own any ambient albums like Filosem or later.........

How can one consider Filosofem as an ambient album? Just curious. Yes, it does have one very long ambient track and one instrumental, but the first 3-4 tracks are black metal at it's finest IMO.

You can't compare his previous works to the ambient ones. They are different breed. I don't like Det Som Engang Var, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, ect.
