Need help organizing my growing record collection

I've had to re-organize it several times over the past 10 years. It seems to keep on growing and its getting harder and harder to find particular records again. Before I do it again I'm wondering how you guys manage your 2000+. Do you guys break them up into genres? What if the majority of records are in one genre like jazz? Break them up by date, sub-genre, or what? I'm looking forward to your input. Thanks, aaron.

I'm currently using a large antique book shelf with four adjustable shelves that have holes drilled in for dowel rods to hold records. The records themselves are only in alphabetical order.

I always just filed mine ( around 1,200 LPs ) alphabetically ( with dividers I purchased from a record store) by artist's name. Certain genres like comedy, soundtracks and compilation albums had their own sections. Filing everything by genre can get confusing as it's difficult to pigeon-hole many artists.

Yeah I agree with genre's being hard to lable some of the time. if I were to do it I'd be very generic like arcade fire under rock, amon tobin under Jazz (since I have no other electronica [sic] albums).

Number them and make a List. Should be quite easy to find a particular record, even if you make the list with ms excel

Not a bad Idea at all. If i keep the list on my computer it'll be easy to update the list. The only problem I can see is that my collection keeps growing and if they all have a set value writen on a sticker slapped on the record and I need to put a new record somewhere in the middle of my collection then all the numbers in on either side will have to be changed. I guess I could learn how to use the library of congress decimal system.....

With a numerical system as smuh suggested, there'd be no need to put a new record "somewhere in the middle"...at least not physically. Just number and shelve them in order. On your computer list you can divide and sort them by artist, genre, or whatever...find what you're looking for...and simply go to your shelf looking for it's number. That's probably the easiest system to maintain and quickest to find what you're looking for.

Just do it in alphabetical order by last name. I can't see why that can't work. Unless your dyslexic (boy, i do hope i spelled that right).

Yeap, and that is the only pratical way I see for such a big collection.

Trying to put them in alphabetical order will always get you into trouble :-) You would always have to move more or less your whole collection or a big part of it from time to time.

I guess I am the oddball. I do it genre-subgenre-alpha-date of orginal release.

I think that's worth 39 bucks. I think I'm going to get this. My collection isn't as large as yours but who the hell knows how out of hand this hobby of mine will be in twenty years. Thanks for the link kevin.
