First time poster, long time lurker needs help picking an amplifier

I’ve been browsing these fine forums for a couple of months now. You guys helped me in a lot of ways: you have rekindled my love for music, given me advice on which headphones to purchase and opened up a whole new world of hardware-options to me... I always thought that any source and any headphones/speakers would do my music justice, boy was I wrong! Thanks! I love my fresh Grados SR60’s and my newly LAME 3.97b VBR re-encoded albums (kudos also goes out to Hydrogen Audio).

To my question.

Will an AMP make any significant difference in the audio quality of my portable rig? And if it does make a difference, could you guys/gals give some advice on which AMP to buy for my Grados SR60’s and 1G iPod Mini? At the moment I’m listening to almost every genre, except classical/orchestral.

My grammar isn’t anywhere near top notch, I’m a Swede so please don’t bash my spelling and/or sentences. He he... I should have that as an quote

EDIT: I hope that I have posted this topic in the right forum. It is about portable audio :/

Hi and welcome,

I use my iPod mini connected through the line-out to a Xin Super Micro amp. It makes a good match with the mini as it's about the same size. Also there is a bass boost switch which is handy to boost the iPod's weak bass.

Is it worth it? I'd say yes. It's definately an improvement. There seems to be a fuller, richer sound.

Welcome to Head-fi, and sorry 'bout your wallet.

Grab a Sik Ram, or a Pocketdock, grab a decent IC, like the Sky Blue Mini, and a nice but cheap amp. Improves dynamics by quite a bit. Some cheap but nice amps are PA2V2s, high-end CMOYs from ebay, and Go-Vibe V3.

Welcome and sorry about your wallet, the usual greeting here.....
Usually the first thing to mention while looking for something, is the budget....with no idea of how much are you willing to spend, is really hard to recommend anything....

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. A DIY CMoy is a great bang for the buck while others like the Xin Macro cost mroe, but is sure to sound great as well.

Hello, and welcome to head-fi!

I'd like to give you a little warning about upgrading your gear. You need to think about how searious you are about this hobby. If you are really getting into it alot you might not want to just get the gear that will just get you by for now. If you plan on upgrading in the future at all you're going to regret spending money on, lets say, a Cmoy that you now also have to upgrade as well. I'd say just maybe try to work a little more once in a while, don't go out to eat as much and SAVE as much as you can till you can get the gear you really want!

Let me now apologize for being born in America and being a work-a-holic and desperate consumer.
