Arsis - a breath of fresh melodic death air from... Virginia?

had a pretty successful foray into the local brick shop today. picked up Arsis' A Celebration of Guilt on a whim..

..so, who would have thought that a melodic death revival would come at the hands of two guys from Virginia? i didn't actually realize that they are American until after i got through the album, and i still find it hard to believe. Arsis does Gothenburg better than most Gothenburg bands, only they do it way faster and with a touch of tech. not to mention that the two of them create music that is far tighter and more focused than many 4-5 man groups.

these guys create music that is hand-crafted for people that think late-period In Flames sucks, Dark Tranquility is too straightforward, At the Gates is way too slow, and Death is one of the greatest things to ever grace the world of metal.

i'm really starting to think that Willowtip is one hell of a label.

EDIT: and as if that weren't enough, they write great lyrics as well.

Haha, I can't believe that I am bringing this back 5 years later. The first time I listen to A Celebration of Guilt, I was floored! To be honest, this if one of my favorite metal albums of all time. I am only 17 (18 in two weeks :D), but I have been into metal since I was 8! Slayer total converted me \m/(*_*)\m/

The three bolded albums above are some of my favorite melodeath albums. I am especially fond of Above the Weeping World.

Their first three albums were awesome, the latest one... not so much

@vikingatheart: awesome avatar biggrin.gif really getting into the album, as an aside, the production on it is kind of rough, my Pana HJE900's do an awesome job of separating the elements in that whirlwind of sound (think into the painted grey). Which headphones do you use to listen to them?

Why thank you! I use my relatively new (got them on the 1st but am using them ALOT) Grado sr80is. I LOVE the way my Grados sound, and Agalloch just sounds great through them!

Also, 'bout the production, it should sound a lot different from say, Ashes. The reason for this is they didn't use pods to play straight into the computer, they actually recorded the amps. I read somewhere that they haven't done that since Pale Folklore. I could be wrong though, so don't take that as gospel.

Yeah, it's a pretty solid album.
