M-Audio LX4 and Mirage NanoSub??

Been a long time since I have posted here on head-fi. I am grateful for the help recieved from members here on my purchase choices in terms of headphone gear, portable gear and even my speaker rig.

I am in a situation where I want to setup a second speaker rig. My main speaker rig is at home in my parents house, it being too big for where i am staying now for work purposes. Hence I have been planning on using my computer as a source (M-Audio audiophile 2496 soundcard), run it into my hafler pre and use the pre to control some powered speakers and a sub. I have $500 to spend on this setup and was thinking of pairing the LX4s with a sub I have seen on amazon for $150, The Mirage Nanosub. Since my room is a small room, I dont see the need for a big very powerful sub so an 8 inch sub is more than sufficient. also I would like to have the other speakers on my desktop so they need to be pretty small. I am looking at the powered combo to eliminate the need for an external amplifier again because space is a premium. I also have a Paradigm X30 crossover that I bought and dont use, so this is a perfect opportunity to use it to control te sub.

My main purpose for these would be for just listening to music, but I also do some recordings every once in a while so I would use them for monitoring as well, so there needs to be some accuracy as well. I dont want to go the T-Amp route cause of the low power and an extra component that I dont need.

My signal path would be: 2496 > Hafler DH100 > Paradigm X30 > to sub and speakers, which to me makes the most sense.

I can consider other subs and monitors as well, but they need to be neat and cost under $500 total.

I did a search for the LX4 and didnt come up with much, but they seemed to be well rated for what they are and I think adding the sub may be what the doctor ordered?

My main rig is in my sig and the rig I am using hooked up to my computer right now are some Boston Acoustics BA635 2.1 speakers from years back that I got from my brother. They sound ok, but I crave for more accuracy, more power, more bass, more midrange, less coloration....... in otherwords a big upgrade.

I could just get the promedia 2.1s but I don't know if that would be such a huge sonic upgrade from the Bostons. The unfortunate thing for me is that I cant listen so I cant just go to the store and hear the speakers cuz none are sold herein SVG, so I have to go by some hearsay and by some shrewd decision making.

Hope you guys can help.

Mirage makes great subs, well overlooked actually. The newer Omni series S8 sub is quite a little dynamic sub for $200 at Amazon/vanns.com right now, which reaches lower than the Nanosub and isn't much bigger.

I haven't heard the Nanosub, but I've heard the S8 and it's great. The platinum finish is quite a dark gray (not in the least bit brown as some pictures show). I'd recommend that one for sure.

Thanks for the reply.

Well I have orderred....... and I went with the NanoSub and the Mission M30i speakers that were on sale at Amazon. So I payed $250 for my speaker setup for my PC. I alreday have a pre, an intgrated and a crossover, so I will make this setup work somehow. I will utilize cheap cables for the time being and if I need to upgrade, then I will.

Thanks for the reply on the Mirage subs. It gives me a little more confidence in my purchase. The Nano sub uses the same driver as the S8 sub, but a different amp and enclosure layout. Hope its not too bad. My room is small anyway, so I dont need overpowering subs (my room is like 10 x 12 feet).

So I will let you know how it went and will check back in a few weeks when I get my stuff.

dudlew,

Please let us know how your system is performing in a few weeks after you have some time with the Mirage sub. I have auditioned Energy's powered subs, Mirage's sister company, and found them to be excellent performers. Best of luck.

I have a set of LX-4s and they are the class of the Lineaum lineup (best with tube gear.mine are on a HH Scott 299B integrated ).
A sub is not essential if listening near field but a must in a larger space or you risk blowing out the tiny kevlar woofers attempting to get any true bass output so look for something that can cross over in the 120hz area if you want it to be a seemless blend with this speaker and putr it dead nuts in the middle of the two if phasing and accuracy are important to you.
The LX-4 ideally should have a very steep cutoff at the xo point if you play loud otherwise go for a passive single pole gradual rolloff.
This is one "mini" that will likely be far better than any budget sub you mate to it but at the same time hard to justify the cost of a better sub when the pair only cost $100 each originally.Especially if you add a monor crossover upgrade

Soundboy, will do. It will be a while yet as it has to go through international shipping and all that jazz, but I will update.

Rick........ HUH?????

I think you have mixed up the Radiohack speakers with the M-Audio ones. There is no Lineaum tweeter in the M-Audio LX-4 that I know of and its a powered pair meant for desktop monitoring/multimedia use I believe. So I believe that there may have been some confusion there.

I am hoping that this setup will sound great. In the not too distant future, I will try and get a cheap affordable power amp that wont take up desk space. The amps spoken about by soundboy I think over at AV123.com seems to be the right ticket. The goal is that it must be small, or mountable anywhere.

I was even thinking of using a car amp to power the Missions and use a Twelve volt DC power supply for it. I can fasten the amp to the desk with some screws and put the power supply on the ground to save space. But this is something I hear very little of and dont know howmany people do this and think it sounds any good. I may try it one of these days as some of these amps are pretty cheap and car batteries are quite affordable. If I dont like it, I can sell both and make back most of my dough easy.

But thats in a different time and place.

I will keep you guys posted

dudlew,

Check into whether this TEAC A-L700P power amp is still available. From all indications on this forum and elsewhere, such as audiocircle.com, this inexpensive power rocks big time.

AAARGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wait is killing me. I was supposed to be listening already. Instead the gear is stuck in customs. I dont even know if they have cleared customs yet. The shipping agency rep is one of the hardest to get on to, so I cant say where anything is!!

I decided to update the thread anyway. I have things setup and waiting. My setup would be as follows:

M-Audio 2496 -> Hafler DH100 preamp -> Paradigm X30 Crossover, 80 Hz high pass to Nikko NR-819 reciever and sub signal to the Mirage NanoSub to be set up by ear -> NR-719 -> Mission M30i speakers.

The Nikko is too big to fit on my desk, so I'll put it on the floor, fix the volume control and use the Hafler for source switching and volume on the desk, as its a smaller neater unit.

I am waiting ever so anxiously. This will for sure be easily better than my current setup for the computer and at no really high expense as the electronics are components I have lying around collecting dust (figuratively), and I actually like listening to my current setup, but it cant kick like I want it to. The lower mids are scooped, the highs are a little harsh, the bass is weak and lacks punch, yet what it does have is quite well meshed, so te sound is listenable all the same. But I NEED the improvement big time. Its like drugs at this point. I am craving the better sound. Speakers and sub.............. PLEASE CLEAR CUSTOMS SO I CAN WALLOW IN SEMI DECENT SOUND AGAIN!!!!!

Correction. The Nikko amp is model NR-819. The model number I gave is probably for a Sansui amp!! Sorry.
