Six months ago, HiGHFLYiN9 (one of several active DIYers here and a great guy to work with) made a 6" RA mini-to-mini interconnect for me. Nothing out of the ordinary -- his standard fare: "I use 22 gauge silver plated copper in a substantial teflon dielectric, litz braided by hand, and excellent switchcraft connectors."
Prior to tonight, I didn't think much about my interconnects and continued to use my Cardas mini-to-mini. Well, from this point forth, that's all changed. I'm now a believer, and this post is mainly for fellow Head-Fi newbies as the senior membership is well aware of the impact of cables.
I did a brief comparison between the HiGHFLYiN9 interconnect and the Cardas cable and there's a very noticeable difference in detail and impact. The HiGHFLYiN9 interconnect really gives life, punch and tightness to the bass and treble. The Cardas cable, in comparison, just doesn't cut it. It sounds like you're sitting much farther back.
If you're going to spend money on an amp and such, then do yourself a favor and spend an additional $20-30 above the $15-20 for the Cardas and buy a quality interconnect. In my $500 home rig (see sig), the Cardas cable was the bottleneck and it's an absolute shame to let such a low cost part to degrade the entire system.
