Newbie - AMP / DAC questions

Hi @. I've been lurking for a while & am finding the research phase of my journey into head-fi to be a lot of fun, thanks to all you lot! I've already purchased some HD600 cans, which are being run in at the moment. I'm using a PC with M-Audio Delta 410 soundcard to drive a cheapo (and nasty I think) Pro-ject Head Box amp at the moment, but I think the setup would benefit from a DAC/(good)AMP combo. I have already asked a question about the soundcard on the PC forum, but I'd like to pick your collective brains on the AMP/DAC side of things please.

I'm tempted by a WooAudio 3 amp, which seems to receive a lot of praise, and which would give me the nice warm sound I like (hey, I have Sonus Faber speakers too so transparancy isn't my main concern ). My question is this...with a pretty modest budget (maybe £500 ish...less than $1k), how should I be splitting that budget between AMP & DAC? Would I hear the greatest benefit by concentrating on the DAC...you can't put back what you lose further down the chain after all, or 50/50...or maybe more on the AMP? As it's pretty much impossible to demo most of this kit (especially in the UK), I'm sure you'll appreciate that researching this stuff can cause a few headscratchers! Many thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers. Mark.

I have never heard/used your soundcard... so I can't say how good the DAC on it is.

However I can tell you that when I switched from using my PC's output with the DAC on the SB-Live to digital out from the PC with a better DAC, I could hear a difference.
