How Do I Get That Sound From This Stuff?

I’m throwing myself on you guys ‘n gals more experienced ears and wallets.

Source: Musical Fidelity X-Ray V3. Cans: Senn 650s.

Spending $$: 1200 or so

Music: pop, folk, more and more new age, Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, 70s prog rock (ELP/Yes & such), early Motown, Miles Davis, Soft Machine, showtunes, ambient, electronic (think Kraftwerk, Vangelis), some techno/house, choral recordings in the Mormon Tabernacle vein. No metal, hip-hop.

Desired sound: presentation more forward than laid-back (do-able with the 650s? They were a comfort/sound compromise, I had Grado 325s but found them too vice-like) solid but controlled bottom without bloat or ‘extension’, lush midrange, clear highs without grain.

Amplifier is . . . ?

I have the Grado's SR-125 and the RS-1. Since I also have the HD600 I think I can comment on the "vice-like" you mentioned.

In my opinion there is no comparison, the Grados are far less "vice-like" than the Senn. Not noly does the Senn squeezes your head HARD but you have to be very careful if you try to open them up because the paint can and will start flaking off.

Personally I find that I like the sound out of Grados more detailed and not as muddy. In order to improve the sound I defoamed my HD600 and replace the foam with gauze material which improved the sound a bit by making the high notes more present. Currently I am waiting for a cable from Moon Audio to further test the Senn. It should get here by next Wednesday.

If that does not open up the HD600 back they go.

You could try Grado RS-1 or RS-2 paired with a Mapletree Ear Purist + HD. You should not have any problem in doing it for less than $1200 with the RS-1 or even less with the RS-2. The sound is very detailed and mellow.
