Jeff, Don't expect a definitive answer to that question for months, months you could be enjoying the L3000. I'd give Lee the $100 and gaurantee getting in on a fading opportunity.

well, compared to the W1000 and W2002 (the L3000 isn't a good comparison since the leather gets in the way of comparing actual cup depths) I don't think there's much difference if any. the W1000 and W2002 have much narrower rims around the wood so if we account for that I think the distance between the drivers and the cup would be pretty similar for the W5000 and the newer ATH-W series cans.

compared to the very old ATH-W cans such as the W10VTG (first one ever) the more recent ones have noticably thinner cups, but I don't think I notice a difference in soundstage between them.

besides, the driver on the W5000 seems to be angled from what I can tell, so that'll help with the soundstage issue.

Nice thread. Very informative. Let's talk more about the girl. I think she looks better than the headphones. You guys seem to disagree. Am I missing something? I mean, they're really nice looking headphones, but still...

Hard to pinpoint, but the girl's face has something quirky/unique about it that guys are either going to dig or dislike. Now personally I dig the girl (moreso than the cans, er headphones), but that's just me

Mike,

Calm down man! The W5000 definitely looks interesting. I wonder if we have a better snap shot of the cord and the plug on the W5000. L3000's cord is twice the size of the W2002's. If the cord on the W5000 is identical to the L3000 and the two share the same driver, the W5000 might just be an L3000 w/o Connolly leather.

Im most surprized by the last few sentences in the article. The newly released models will also be sold in oversea markets. Quote:" Overseas release will be concurrent with the release in Japan"
Whoa! AT is going to sell Headphones worldwide!

The cord in the limited photo's seem to indicate a standard cord, rather than the doubled L3000 version. The plug end, while similar, shows much more taper at the cord side. Of course, they deleted the silk wrap, also.

Tell you what. If W5000 takes the smoothness of W10LTD, the dynamics and speed of L3000, and provides a wide soundstage with good imaging and detail, i'll be selling my SA5K and joining team ATOWF

It looks like dynamite. The comfort will undoubtedly be stellar. The pricetag is doable. It just has to sound right...
