I bought mine from Sweetwater. No problems, very happy with the transaction but I can't swear it's the lowest possible price out there.

http://www.sonicsense.com/anadigiMDAC.htm

Don't know how reputable, haven't shopped yet either; but the woman I've corresponded with via email seems serous and a really nice person too. Price with USB: $969.

That is where I bought mine from. I had no problems with them and they are an authorized Apogee dealer.

for that price, a benchmark would be my preference

Not with Grado's it shouldn't.

Apogee Mini-DAC + Grado = extreme goodness

gotchya

i guess the analytical nature of the DAC1's sound doesnt synergize so well with Grados, 580/600/650s on the otherhand

...back ontopic now

A woman at sonic sense? Hrm. Sonic Sense used to be Marc Nutter. Good guy tho. Great source for live taping equipment.

yep, 1911 has HD650s coming, but his main can is still the RS-1, and i bet he'll be digging the MiniDAC when they're restocked.

Parker is her given name. She told me 99% of her clients are male and she's not.

Is that in reference to the Apogee as a source only with Grado's or are you talking about not only the source but the headphone jack driving Grado's? I've been real curious about the headphone section. Heck, I could sell my DAC and amp for a simple unit like this and be done, end of story, case closed. One cable: USB, period.

i was talking about the headphone out as well. the miniDAC's integrated headphone amp pairs very well with the Grados and i could totally live with it.

Slick rig. For home, work and road, this is the route I'm looking at.
I'll be picking up an RA-1 too eventually, but I have no idea at this point whether I'll be keeping it or not.

Edit: BTW, it's probably a good enough sign that a "where to buy it" question turns into an appreciation thread on page 1.

Jahn - What kind of circuit/amp is it, do you know? Did they put much attention toward it? What kind of a pot is it? Any of pics of the amp section you know of?

As much as I have read about this piece and it's glowing impressions I for the life can't figure out how it could sound so good with a wall wart power supply?? It uses a wall wart, right? Wonder what it could sound like a with something like a STEPS.
