Any of you hip-hop experts heard The Craft yet? I really loved Blazing Arrow and Nia. This one is attrocious though. Powers has to be the worst thing I've heard under the guises of "underground" hip-hop. It truly begs the phrase "underground for a reason". On tracks like Lotus Flower they fall into a familiar groove, until a very loose and pointless chorus comes in.

Just give me a 12 minute epic again like Release, what a great track that was.

I'm listening to it right now. Love these guys. I do however agree with the cut at "powers" - starts out good, but it sounds like a bad N.E.R.D track after a bit..

I can't let it wreck the rest of the album though. I'm a firm believer in giving an album 5 to 10 listens before really giving my opinion. Too many albums have taken a ton of time for me to truly love them.

So far, I love "my pen and pad", "your move", "automatique", "give it to you", and "the craft" (I like the 70's club feel) ....other numbers contain the catchy beats which are all good...
I'll see how time affects my thoughts of the record.

Have you heard the Gift of Gab's solo album called "4th dimentional rocketships going up"? If not, I highly recommend it.

I'm a big fan of Blackalicous, Quannum, et al

Gab's solo CD, though underwhelming at first, grew on me.

I'm not yet won over by the Craft. not sure I even want to buy it...

The Gift of Gab's got some technical skill, but the whole sound of the songs just sounds a little off. I'm not much of a big fan of Chief Xcel, his beats are too weird or anemic in a way that Gab can't rock the beats.. Sometimes his verses just sound like he's going on and on, monotonously. I dunno, I have mixed feelings, NIA was better.. The only thing I like on the album is Ego Sonic Wardrums because it's the most energetic beat out there, and just the title is awesome.

It could be that I'm listening to the "harder" underground stuff a lot lately. El-p, can ox, Aesop Rock (Bazooka Tooth and the new EP), MF Doom, Dizzee Rascal.... Some of them don't quite have the skill of Gift of Gab but a much more progressive sound.

Just found out that a lot of The Craft uses live instrumentation, I'll give it a few more good listens to let that grow on me.

Gift of Gab is a beast. He must have gills or something to have breath control like that. I do find his lyrics a bit dry, and the production a bit too mellow for my taste most of the time. It's a nice alternative though, for people who don't care for the crunk music.

Yeah, sadly, that's the best going for Gab. His technical skill is superb, but he doesn't have the beats and energy that define some people.. He should get rid of the Chief.

The CD got better with each listen for me. Still not as good as blaze though.

slightly OT, i know, (although they are quannum brothers) but i really do like Lyrics Born's latest CD. I liked it when it first came out, and every time I've popped it on or it's played on my iPod since. some of the remixes are just plain fun and lively. plus, it's got lots of bay area love.

Could you imagine GOG with Primo from Gangstarr?
Gab has to be one of the most underated lyricists of all time.

Okay, bumping a really old one here.

I've liked Blazing Arrow for a long time, and I just got Nia yesterday and I'm really loving it. I like it more than Blazing Arrow, I think.

I was looking for some recommendations of similar artists -- I like Jurassic 5 a lot too, so something similar to those guys would be great. Thanks.

Check out Latyrx, which is a duo made up of Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker, who both also have other material, solo and with other artists, to check out if you like Latryx. Also, if you don't know about it, Gift of Gab dropped an album with Lateef and Headnodic (of Crown City Rockers, another group to check) as the Mighty Underdogs. Also, check out Lifesavas, a group out of Portland.

Gift of Gab's got a new solo joint that's about to drop: Escape 2 Mars. I've heard some of it…seemed cool.
