Also you could here the music if everything was very quiet just from the needle surfing the groove.

I clean thrifters with white vinegar and a rinse in distilled water. Then I towel dry and let them dry overnight before playing. Works great. If you use dish soap, use very little... not even enough to foam. Otherwise it will leave a residue. It's best to use distilled water rather than tap too.

Agreed with the distilled water part, but re: dish soap -- it leaves no residue on dishes, why would it leave a residue on vinyl records?
