Is it a portable amp? I might be interested.

Looks highly exaggerated, imho... Such a design is probably more an eye catch than actual progress in sound, I'm not sure this sounds any better than a WA2...

There was a thread about this awhile ago, it is actually a speaker amp too hence the rather large size.

Actually its different from the other amps in that it is *not* OTL. Many people think of this as a really bad thing, but I don't mind transformer coupled tube amps at all and think people just like hearing audio buzzwords more than the sound itself. Also its a speaker amp as well (which is probably another reason why its transformer coupled). By sticking all the transformers into those 'pretty' boxes hopefully it helps with shielding? I think it looks blocky, and you only have a limited viewing angle for tubes .

yes,it is hard to say that OTL amp is better than the "not" OTL amp, almost all of the McIntosh amps have the output tranformers, include the solid state amps, and the Mc amps are great!
someone discussed the wa4 in this thread:

Does it come with a belt clip?

How could you possibly know this?

I do not know in this instance and if it applies to the person your questioning or this amp but a skilled amp maker/electrical engineer, ect. or an audiophile with a vast amount of exposure to different tube amp combinations can tell what works and what probably won't. In the Biz, certain tube types are known for there sound. Also one can know, by past experience what makes a good supply and drive tube and which ones make a good source tube. Also, from personal experience, they can know which combinations work well or marry together. Then again some of this can also be born out by doing the associated amp construction math, finding that a given drive tube will have to be pushed to hard with higher plate voltages to have enough umph to drive a certain supply tube thus causing and increased chance of creating distortion in the supply tube or even premature failure, just as one example.
