Clapton unplugged
Van Halen (first release) but only for its stellar guitar tracks. Dont know what they did to get EVH's marshall tone on tape but its incredible IMHO.

Im not into classical really that much but my brother has a bunch of Telarc Cincinati Pops orchestra concerts that are outstanding IMHO.
Clapton unplugged might be the best recorded live album I have heard, I also find Sultons of Swing, Dyre Straits Greatest Hits to be very nice.

this thread is freakin' sweet, it's going to take me months to sift though all this treasure.

Well,

This thread's over 5 years dead but, meh, since you've resurrected it, we may as well continue.

2x on Donald Fagen Nightfly, DSOTM, Harvest and Kind of Blue.

Radiohead's later albums are supreme.

Also, Crosby, Stills and Nash's self titled never fails to impress.

Some of my favorites (not an exhaustive list):

*Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

*Genesis - Foxtrot (a bit rough, but clear and well laid out)

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Yes - Close To The Edge

Yes - Fragile

Rick Wakeman - Six Wives Of Henry VIII

Dutoit/OSM - Holst - The Planets (Penguin) (just a spectacular performance, and an excellent-sounding recording)

E. Power Biggs (pretty much anything he released)

*If you pick a digital format, make sure you get the 1994 editions--the newer releases are godawful

EDIT: Wow. Didn't notice the starting date. It was on the first page, so I guess that makes it fair game.
