in your opinion, what are the best recorded albums of all times....whether it be quality, or originality, etc.....i dont mean what your favorite albums are, since californication is one of my favorites, but i dont think it was recorded well at all
post #2 of 54
yeah it sucks that californication sounds so horrible, its my fav album from the peppers.

is it just me, or are a lot of pop/R&B albums mixed really REALLY well? like Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi", Gwen Stefani's "L.A.M.B.", and Kanye West's new album "Late Registration"? i dunno bout you, im not the HUGEST fan of their music, but it does sound very nice. the bass is tight and thumping, highs are shimmery and distinct, vocals are clear.

i won't bother listing the obvious, somebody else will prolly do that (ie. Clapton unplugged, brothers in arms, etc"

yeah i do agree with your statement

I cant really say... "of all time" that would imply one has heard everything... But of my collection:

The police Live 1983, Synchronicity concert
The Eagles Millenium concert
Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms
Pink Floyd, DSOTM
Clapton unplugged
Van Halen (first release) but only for its stellar guitar tracks. Dont know what they did to get EVH's marshall tone on tape but its incredible IMHO.

Im not into classical really that much but my brother has a bunch of Telarc Cincinati Pops orchestra concerts that are outstanding IMHO.

I second Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms and Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

The Soundtrack for Kansas City (Verve).

Charlie Haden's albums on Naim (both duets with Chris Anderson and Charles Taylor).

Mofi's reissue of The Grateful Dead's American Beauty.

Albums on John Fahey's Tacoma label.

-- This is just stuff that I can personally attest to.

I really like Dire Straits - On Every Street. Gotta give brothers a rest from time to time.

Surprised her name hasn't come up, but I have a couple of Diana Krall's SACDs (Look of Love & Girl in the Other Room), and even their CD layer sounds pretty dang good. You can tell it's just a high quality recording. Now, I love U2, but some of their CDs just sound like crap. No matter what equipment you have with it, still sounds like it's coming out of a Bose system.

Some of my favorite best-sounding LPs:
  1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (mastery imaging and instrumental separation)
  2. Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans (one of the most amazing soundstaging I've ever heard)
  3. Eric Clapton - Unplugged (such amazing acoustic depth and a very realistic recording)
  4. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (Zappa made the best rock recordings - period - amazing bass on this recording, lightning fast transitions and dynamics, a perfect top-end, and very emotional guitar placement and effects)
  5. Alan Parsons Project - I Robot (Alan Parsons was the recording engineer for Dark Side of the Moon, so he made sure it sounded great - awesome dynamics and a very vivid soundstage)
  6. John Lennon - Imagine - Mobile Fidelity 180 Gram Release (i've never heard vocal purity like that before)
  7. Neil Young - After the Goldrush, Harvest, Greendale, etc. (all Neil Young albums are mastered with incredible weight and strength. Every time that acoustic guitar is struck, it sounds like he is right there in front of you, playing your own private show. His recordings are among the most intimate in the world)

off topic for Aman,

Have you heard the cd version of Joe's Garage, and how is it, recording wise and musical wise? My favorite Zappa albums are Zoot Allures and apostrophe, but my zappa is quite limited and im looking to expand

Agree. All Diana Krall's albums sound excellent.

Diana Krall's albums are all great recordings. Recently I bought the remastered version of "Time Out" by the The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and I'm just amazed by the clarity of Paul Desmond's solos, and especially the accompaniment/soloing of Dave Brubeck. The hiss is definitely present, but the warmth is just dreamy. Not bad for a relatively old recording.

Well... I find a lot of the music distributed under the category of "new age" is surprisingly well recorded. I'm not a huge fan of that type of music (an admittedly broad category) but the recording quality can be incredible in some cases, for both acoustic and electronic stuff.
