I stumbled over the auction I mentioned by accident while looking for something else entirely. It was an ED-1, of that I'm certain. But I've spent the last couple of days trying to find that auction again with no success. On the other hand, I also can't find a record of the auction for the stacked Dahlquist DQ-10s that were on eBay just a couple of weeks ago. In lieu of an affordable ED-1, how about some experimental parametric EQ settings to try out on your own equalizer? Here's what some folks on the Riovolution website came up with:

Owners of the old Stax Lambda Pro/Lambda Signature could try the following set, which is a pretty close approximation to the response curve of the Stax ED-1 diffuse field equalizer:

-6dB @ 10kHz, 0.4 octaves
-3dB @ 6kHz, 0.4 octaves
+6dB @ 3kHz, 1.8 octaves
-4dB @ 1.2kHz, 1.4 octaves
+2dB @ 600Hz, 0.8 octaves

He'd hate to have to do it, but there may be nothing for Jahn to do but sell the ol' 1935 Tatra 77a...

Don't do it, Jahn! Where else but in the Vintage World will you find a car with a drag coefficient of 0.21?

Stax is the Tatra 77a of headphones.

Volvo, bah.

I just happen to own a big boxy volvo-like BSR EQ-3000, so I'll dial up those presets and see what happens! *runs to ebay and tries like heck to find that ED-1*

Interesting. I used the EQ in itunes to approximate those #s (the hz don't exactly match but i smoothed out that curve nicely) and the EQ doesn't seem to add anything when on, but when i turn it back off the STAX sounds flat lol - so I guess it's doing something subtle! I don't think eqing it this way expands the soundstage at all, but then it's no ED-1 I'm sure!

Well after a few days I finally put the HP2 back on, especially since Pinkie might be leaving for a new home soon. After 5 min of reacclimation, I remembered why I'm still a Grado Guy. Man, good stuff. STAX tickles me in the right way, but so does Grado - who knew I was so flexible in terms of what I found to be an entertaining evening of listening? Everyone should have one dynamic, one electrostatic rig!

revelatory moment achieved with "Enjoy the Silence '04 (Richard X Remix)"

Just put the Stax back on and MUAHAHA the bass is just great! It's like the Darth Beyers, without the BOOM. It's like the "Run Silent, Run Deep" mode.

uh oh

wife came out and said "what are you doing? that's too loud i can totally hear it from the other room! give me those!"

she put the Stax on. she looked silly.

"where's the volume on this?"

she turned the sony receiver volume down. i reached for the SRM-1 and turned it a bit down.

"still too loud!"

she turned it down to the 8 o' clock position.

"here, this is ok."

I put em on, Dave Gahan was whispering "words are very, unnecessary, they can only do harm"

*cry*

well, at least this proves that Lambda Pros are just as open as Grados - and more so, once the HP2s have CPads on!

Looks like I'm not the only one getting in trouble with the SO over headphones...

I think they need a sub-forum here called Wife-Fi for the displaced, neglected, and annoyed.

I wonder if anyone ever lost a GF or even got divorced over a headphone hobby. I know it happens over videogames and sports, but listening to music? Who knows. Not me tho, I'll happily listen at 8 o'clock until my sister gives my darn Darth Beyers back so I can blast late at nite in peace!

C'mon we all know how precious closet space is here in NYC. I think it's time to better utilize the kitchen or bathroom. Maybe the portable rig to bring into the fire escape...or just a girl that's hard of hearing?
