Thanks for the reminder.
...and lo and behold, this time they took time replying my email.
Looks like they are working on a K701 successor, which might be launched at CES 2010. I hoped for a K1000 successor (or revival), but don't seem like there are much chance... Oh well!

Dear Mr. ....,

Thank you for contacting AKG and for your friendly words about our K 1000.
We plan to launch a successor of the K 701 in foreseeable time, possibly CES
2010.

Kind regards

Isn't 702 just a different colour option?

I don't see where you're getting that from the link you gave...

That press release more or less says it's just a K701 in a different color with a detachable cable to target it at pro audio instead, then gives a short blurb about the features / specs that are common with the K701. AKG makes tweaks and changes to headphones regularly, so it's entirely possible it does sound slightly different, but current production K701s will also have the same changes in sound (both K701 and K702 drivers are the same AKG part number).

My very first pair came in today from (SN 04023 (Bass Heavy) - these are all and more, simply the BEST dynamics I have ever heard and comparable to (but different from) Stax electrostats - only problem I have is that I can't seem to be able to remove them from my head - - - running them through my Technics SU -V5 Class 'A' Amp...and just waiting on delivery of the AKG/SAC K-1000 Amp from Germany. Oh what a summer it promises to be with several relatively newly purchased cans (Koss ESP-950 and Audeze LCD-2 also) and my new iPad - little time for sleep - all play!

Charliex, glad you enjoy them! The K-1000 was my first top-shelf headphone and I still love them, more than four years on.

I know you have a new amp coming, but if you ever really want to hear them sing, try hooking them up to a fleawatt DHT (directly heated triode) amp. I've heard mine on a couple of 2A3 based amps and they're simply magical. Putting them onto the Moth is one of the greatest audio pleasures I've had.
