Well, my speaker system far exceeds what I get from headphones, but then again I don't have a dedicated HP amp either. That's 350e for the amp and 250e for the speakers, and I happen to quite like both of them. I was afraid the Cambridge and the Tannoys would sound too bright together, but either I was wrong or the NAD cdp manages to curb that effectively.

$550 magnepan MMG pair
$1000 sub of your choice
$598 2xoutlaw audio m200 monoblocks
preamp of your choice

This setup would beat my PS1s and Dynahi for the cost of the preamp more.
BUT, only in a well set up room.

thing is that a well set-up room can be a devilish prospect. setup/and my wife bitching about the floor jumping is why I am going to cans. my home setup is decent w/ NAD 753, T533, Gale 30 sub and Focal chorus 705s(going to upgrade to Ushers). I can't JAM with this setup hardly ever though and I would think that the soundstage would e a pain in the rear to get right compared to cans.
otherwise I believe a good set of speakers can be had for 300-1000 in the same range of cans BUT they often need a sub. I guess what I'm saying is it's a tossup but if u need stealth/aka quiet obviously cans own.

I've owned a ship-load of headphones/amp combinations and I prefer my speaker rig to anything headphoens I've ever owned/heard.

Rough costs (retail) w/o sources:

Cain & Cain Abby: $1700
M&K MX-90 Sub: $1200 (discontinued)
Fi 2a3 SE monos: $4000
EE Minimax SE pre: $1500
PS Audio P-300 w/ MW: $1200

Additional money for various interconnects, power cords, speaker cables, tubes, room treatments, stands, sources, phono pre, etc.

Toshiba 3950 40 bucks.
T-Amp 30 bucks.
Paradigm Titans 250 bucks.
Good cables 40 bucks.

I'm cheap.

This is a great system.

Come over and listen.

I'll chime in and recommend these:

JBL 4311 Monitor Speakers

Sound a lot like Grado HP-2's if not better.
