ASL Quality issues...

Thread Starter
I'm interested in acquiring an ASL MKIII. I was reading some of the older posts on this site and read that many people have had many complaints concerning the overall quality of their products (headphone inputs being screwed on crooked, fuse problems etc). Is this a thing of the past, or something to still be concerned about?

Well, I bought an ASL OTL32 a few months ago and have been more than happy with it. I too, was aware that the build quality had a bad reputation but have found my amp to be just about perfect.

I also have an OTL-32, and I've <<knock wood>> not had a bit of trouble with it.

I know that there were some QC issues in the past, but I've not heard much of that lately...that's all I know.

ASL began to be overshadowed when they 1.) had some serious QA issues, and 2.) some new companies like Singlepower, and the like began to make amps that competed with them on price. That was a difficult thing for ASL to overcome, and I think they are still recovering from that rep.

I had an OTL-32 a couple of years ago. It was pretty nice, although the XLR jack (for AKG K1000's) and the 1/4" jack (for all other headphones) were reversed in their position in relation to each other (left to right) compared to all others I've seen - kinda wierd, but that didn't impact on the sound though, which was quite nice after some tube rolling.

A wire connection to one of the RCA inputs broke off at one point, but I found it easily, an a dab of solder fixed that up in a few seconds.

Then I "sold" it to Williamgoody, and he ripped me off

I would buy another ASL amp, as I think they represent a good value again (many of those other amps have gone up in price since then). I don't know if they've completely overcome their QA woes, but I'd reserve just a wee bit of patience should you find you need a repair in the first few months. Otherwise, you get a very nice amp for your money, imo.
