Well I just set the dB meter's end 1cm away from the driver. What is the good way to do it?

At reference level
my subwoofers alone peak at 115-120 dB
not counting the speakers.

is for your spl meters sensor to 'hear' what you do.
So this means positioning it in such a way that it is positioned and sealed within
an enclosure much the same way your ear drum is when the phones are being worn.
The way headphones are measured by manufacturers is to use a model ear
that the phones cover , with the correct cup pressure etc.
Obviously such methods are costly and impractical for amateur use but I guess
one could make a crude model by inserting the sensor [if possible]
into a soft rubber tube approximately the same length diameter as the ear canal
then fit this assembly into a soft flat panel that represented the side if the head.
Clamping your phone onto this would probably be way better than a free air measurement.
No doubt others here have used more simple approaches to good effect.
I see that makes sense, and would mean I listen to music way too loud
thanks.
thanks.

Myself I prefer to set my volume so the music sounds at the 'correct' volume for the recording/piece/style .
This sometimes means a good stonking blast.
But then I do not go in for endurance listening events just short burst of audio heaven
If I do end up listening for a prolonged time I usually start of as above but
after 20-60 mins the volume is backed right off or the music changed for something more suited to longer
more relaxed listening.
My listening sessions last 6-8 hours usually, the minimum would be around 3-4 hours... so I guess I should bring that volume down a bit
