Hurricane Katrina Poised to Flood Big Easy... - Page 7

How many on this board have been affected?

I don't pray as a general rule, but my thoughts are with those who have suffered from this. Regardless of religion, regardless of race, colour or creed, I think that at least well intentioned thoughts and support where possible is the best thing to offer in this situation

Thanks for posting these links. I'll definitely donate later today when i get home from work.

Moderator...can you make a sticky out of Jeff's post so people can donate with ease?

It's heartbreaking to see an entire city underwater. I was watching the news this morning and the governor (i believe) said it may take six (yes...SIX) monthes before people can start returning, that it may take that long to drain all the flooding out. I doubt citizens will be taking part in the cleaning at all, i imagine bulldozers will be doing all the work. Remember, the city is building below sea level, the flooding isn't going to be as easy to alleviate as we might think. Plus, i agree with Aerius, this might be a good time to rebuild the city farther in to avoid this kind of disaster down the road, because it will happen again eventually.

I am completely knocked on my heels with the growing reports of looters. I have no issues with people taking food and water, if I was there I'd be helping and doing the same damn thing. I am as far as one could be from understanding the mentality of those who are using their energy to steel appliances and even loot gun stores! WTF!?!? Recent reports have stated that 1500 State Police had to be pulled from search and rescue to deal with the growing crime. There have been reports of looters going through homes with dead victims inside and looting those too. As if that weren't enough the evacuation of the Superdome has been halted after shots were fired at a military helicopter! I say treat them like the subhuman scum they are and shot every one they can catch on sight!

Although such reports are very disheartening the amount of generosity and help that is pouring in is incredible and far outweighs the negative. My wifes company donated 50k and will be selecting volunteers to send over to assist, my wife is hoping for the opportunity to be selected.

It is becoming a triple (or Quadruple) tragedy...there are rapes and murders now happening at the refuges, (one man murdered his sister by shooting her in the head over a bag of ice), and they are shooting at the Military helicopters and the volunteer boats that are trying to rescue people. They are backing off and the police are being told to cease rescuing people and to focus on keeping the lid on...thus leaving those who are not shooting to die of exposure/no water/food.

These people are the same ones who stayed in their houses in spite of dire warnings and predictions of the force of the hurricane, in spite of sound cars telling every street to leave, in spite of buses running until the last minutes picking up anyone who need transport. They amount to nearly 20% of the people who lived in the city.

These people are stealing AK-47s, Jewelry, All-Terrain-Vehicles (that are low to the ground/useless in flooded terrain and need Gasoline that is unavailable to run), Big Screen TVs (for which there is no electricity), even beauty and hair products. Those who can get to land are stealing/car-jacking anything that can run on the roads..

Sheesh...

I'm sending my prayers to the innocent ones, and the ones who have morals...the looters should be dealt with in the most severe possible way, and the gang wars and suchlike should be put down just like any Al-Qaida.

It's mind boggling to see what's being shown on the cable news networks. Thousands of people abandoned on elevated highways, without food or water, many dying, while police cars keep driving by. Buildings set on fire by gangs. Widespread looting for TVs, sneakers, and lots of other non-food items. Gun fights between police and remaining residents. And, the forced stopping of helicopter rescues because of shooting at helicopters. Seems like terrible dereliction, unpreparedness, and incompetence at all levels of our government. Where's the President? Where's the Governor? Where's the Mayor? And, where the heck is the army?

I know where the National Guard is.
I don't think that anyone in emergency preparedness could have anticipated that the troops needed to have full armor to help in rescue....and FEMA and the various governments have ALL had a strong presence in the eforts since BEFORE the disaster, offering transport, shelter, advice, ALL OF WHICH WAS REFUSED by the vast majority of those who are now crying for help, and endangering those who must perform any rescue...They were ORDERED to evacuate at one point, by the civil (state) authority...the majority of the blame must correctly rest with those who refused the advice, help, and orders of the civil authorities.

I give thanks for the good thoughts, donations, and commiserations from those privare citizens who live in countries that the U.S. has helped in the past..and others throughout the world...

Stop with the wheres the______???? already. Think for a second about how much it takes to mobilize the kind of man power and resources to deal with evacuating an entire American City not to mention the efforts needed to get supplies in.

The 10,000 new National Guard troops deployed to the regions brought the number of troops dedicated to the effort to more than 28,000 in what may be the largest military response to a natural disaster.

The military expects to put 30,000 National Guard troops on duty in the Gulf states as demands grow for more security and relief assistance after Hurricane Katrina, the commander in charge of military relief and rescue efforts said Thursday, Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore said in a telephone interview with reporters at the Pentagon. He also ordered the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan from the Louisiana coast to waters off Biloxi, Miss., to assist with hurricane and the dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island will join five other Norfolk-based Navy ships (that makes a total of 7 Naval ships folks) that were already under way or in the Gulf as part of the Defense Department contingent being deployed to the stricken region.

These numbers are amazing and will increase. Remember this just happened Sunday/Monday and it is only Thursday!

The deteriorated conditions at the Superdome, I can't even begin to image what it must be like staying there:

I just read that Fats Domino decided not to evacuate and stayed at his home in New Orleans with some family members. So far, nobody's seen him since.

That's how many days and nights with old people and kids abandoned on overhead highways, without food or water? And, according to Fox on site reporters, police cars drive back and forth, without stopping, and without giving any help or instructions. Really great emergency preparedness. Strange that with so many supposed troops, according to on scene FOX, CNN, and MSNBS reporters, there are virtually none to be seen. And, throughtout the night, criminals rule.

That is cold comfort indeed to those who are starving and being left to die.

Wrong.

This thread is on its last legs and that's a shame. I know there is a a need to discuss major events like this, but if it goes political, then it will have to go to another web site.

It's your call.
