You know, none biased news. Well anyways, this (storm) has hit a historical city, I hope that no more will die and for a swift recovery.

But you're right there are no hurricanes here. (knock on wood) Otherwise the Noord Oost Polder and other polders, parts of the Netherlands that were build after the water was drained and dikes were build around it, would be isanity.

Yeah, when I was looking for some info on 1953 I also found some pics of part of my country flooded up to the rooftops like New Orleans is now.
Strangly enough it's worse to see you own country flooded like that even though that's a long time ago.
Now the New Orleans flood and devistation gets to me even more. These things are so hard to understand and get your head around. My heart goes out to all the people affected.

Condolences from Germany...

...following some totally out-of-line statements by Germany's minister of environmental issue Jürgen Trittin today (basically saying that the US especially George W. Bush brought this desaster on itself by refusing to co-sign the Kyoto treaty on greenhouse gas emissions) I'd like apologize for this f%& up BS of an imbecile and extent my condolences and sympathy to all the American people who have lost friends, family, or their home and belongings in this epic natural disaster that is only beginning to unfold.

Is there an American Red Cross site for donations?

Lisa, I just looked up your country's history as well. The Deltawerkes are incredibly impressive - you should be very proud. The 1952 flood looked pretty ugly; the Deltawerkes site had some great old news reels. The expanse of the flooding was just hard to get a mental grip on.

Problem is here is that a hurricane did this - so there's significant wind and storm damage, and then you add the flooding on top of it. The Louisiana Superdome looks in absolute shambles - it was shocking.

Fl Citizens Task Force:

Looks like students from universities in FL have decided to step in and take action to help sort the mess in whatever way they can. Mechanical/Hydraulic/Structural engineering students are teaming up with professors to head down to the area to evaluate the damage and set-up temporary shelters.

I am trying to contact a few students from my university to get them to pull out the containers and distribute the sweaters and other warm weather clothing.

What a disaster...what a nightmare...I dont have a TV at home but I was out eating dinner two nights back when this happened and I just couldnt eat anymore...

I am in awe of the many that are selflessly giving of themselves and the thousands that have lost their lives. I wish there were a way to get the extra $$$ we are paying for gas to those who really, really need it...

The FEMA site (has an extensive list of other charitable organizations with links to donate/volunteer)

The Salvation Army site

Please donate what you can. Cash donations are much more useful than in-kind donations.
