This is the one people have been talking about for years. Just issued: Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans... First time in history. This is historic here folks

Yes this is terrible, and the storm was upgraded to Cat 5 this morning. I have friends there, and even my car is actually there. Best luck to everyone in the Big Easy.

Wow, after seeing the news reports I am super happy that my wife and I decided to leave back to Austin yesterday afternoon. Traffic wasn't so bad, only took about 2 hours to get to Baton Rouge, so at least then the evacuation plan was working well (it was kinda fun to drive on the wrong side of the highway). I can't believe that this is happening less than 2 weeks since I moved in. At least I only stand to lose a few hundred bucks worth of furniture. My landlord is out of town, his house totally unprotected, and stands to lose everything. What amazes me is the huge number of people without cars or anywhere to go escape the storm (I've heard estimates of 100,000+). Surely they can't all survive in the Superdome. Best of luck to all those who are still there or anywhere nearby.

Sad that I've never taken my wife to party there- now maybe, will never be another there to go to...Best wishes and prayers to all who have to stay in the area...maybe they will be lucky and the storm will miss them, even by just a little bit, so that it will not be totally destroyed.

No! Not the birthplace of jazz Best of luck to everyone who lives there.

Latest reports say 175mph sustained winds with gusts up to 215mph. Whatever it hits is going to be gone. It's an amazing once in a lifetime textbook perfect hurricane, but if the track forecasts are correct, the damage will be unimaginable.

wow, it's gonna hit New Orleans real bad.. the whole city is being evacuated. my thoughts go out to the people there.
Yeah man, that thing's like on a direct hit route for new orleans lol.
for those who don't know, because of the erosion of the wetlands around new orleans, and the bowl-like landscape a storm surge would not just flood it, but put it underwater, literally.

my thoughts are with the folks there. let's hope this doesn't happen.

I saw on the news that there are some oil refineries that could be destroyed. Ouch! More gas price inflation.
Yup, crude oil hit a peak of $70.80 just about an hour ago.

They say the effect on actual gas prices will be even worse, because of the refinery shutdowns.

18-28 foot storm surge, 15 foot waves on top of that and a High Tide plus the city is up to 10 feet below sea level.

If it hits New Orleans in the shape it’s in now they’re toast.

It seems like people are taking this seriously, any other attitude is suicide.

My prayers are with you.

Great post. The erosion of wetlands and dunes really going to hurt them, if the direct hit ever to occur. Many people who choosed to stay will loose their life, city will be flooded and remained under water for up to 6 months, and there won't be any drinking water or sewer treatment for several months. Many tall buildings will be structurally damaged due to hurrican force wind. The size of Katrina is huge and many weather experts called her a "perfect storm". I really hope that New Orleans can dodge another one. I really wish that the Mayor of New Orleans funds a construction of a better seawall to safe the city.

A co-worker of mine is over there now looking for a place to live, I wonder if this will change his mind :P
