IEMs actually protect your ears. It isolates the noise so you don't have to increase the volume to hear everything. On the other hands. Bad earphones like apple ear buds. you have to listen to it with much larger volume because of the bad seal. And with that volume, the frequencies you cant hear is still there which damage your ears.

 

So the bottom line is large volume damages your ears. And of course that's true.
