Speaker Cable lengths--whats your opinion?

As I've found myself more and more deeply engrossed in this hobby over the course of the past few years, I've read a number of conflicting recommendations from seemingly credible sources.

One of these has been the sonic benifit of minimizing speaker cable lengths. Conventional knowledge should dictacte that the less one has in his single path the better, and it is a very common practice for tube monoblock guys to use short (like 4 foot) runs of speaker wire to connect their systems in favor of longer interconnects.

On the other hand, there is a very strong opposition by companies like Mapleshade who claim that not only is there no benefit to having these short cables, but cables cut shorter then 8 feet in length will actually significantly soil fidelity.

Those of you who have followed some of my other threads know I've recently been comparing some cheap Magwire speaker cables (8ft) to my Acoustic Zen Hologram IIs (4ft) and finding strengths and weaknesses in both cables.

Among the major weaknesses in the Magwire (which has been used for ~3 years--no question of burn in) was a very obvious harshness in the upper midrange that seemed to present itself when listening only slightly above normal listening levels. Additionally, tonally everything sounded great with the exception of pianos. I don't know what it was--brass was a treat, as were strings, but piano just didn't sound convincing with the magwire.

Well, in the mood to experiment I decided to cut my Magwires in half and use four feet per speakers (banannas at monos & raw at speaker terminals). I'm not gonna spit up a bunch of the typical audiophile hyperbole about how it transformed my system, blah blah blah.

BUT--I am going to say that the problems I was having with the upper midrange compression/harshness has dissapeared completely (I'm listening to Def Lepard at 74/100 volume setting with my Sonic Frontiers preamp right now). And also, pianos sound considerably more real.

I don't know what this means in terms of prefered lengths, but I do know my rig is sounding great on digital (once I'm settled in my analog rig needs more tweaking--somethings a touch off). And that I've sold the $1K + speaker cable off (same length).

What are your feelings on lengths/comments on my situation?

Rickcr42 has the formula on speaker cable lengths and wire guage with respect to ohms, but I believe you would be hard pressed to notice differences in cables 12 feet long or shorter. They can probably be 20 feet long without any degredation in signal. Since a lot of cable manufacturers build cables with lengths of 10 feet, I would assume that is the optimal compromise between convience and signal degradation.

Strictly speaking from cost, with different cables running mucho $$$$ per foot, take full advantage of your mono blocks and run your speaker cable as short as possible. I use longer balanced ICs from pre > amp, and two short runs of speaker cable to each speaker. Good luck...Your system looks great.

In my system, the longer interconnects with shorter speaker cables worked best. It gave my system a sense of sweetness that I really liked, and the bass tightened up very nicely also. I’m sure this will vary from system to system.

Let me add some practical advice........I would not buy speaker cables shorter than 8ft for simple reason very hard to resell if needed especially if shorter than 6ft (you have had many cables remember )

System needs to be flexible, what if in future you go back to stereo amp now the short speaker cables are useless.....stick with 8ft to keep options open and resell price high.

When you cut the Magwires in half, did you change any of the connections? Are the bannanas the same? Did you have raw connections at the speakers before? It does seem odd, that making a 4 foot difference in length would have such an affect. I am glad that it worked for you.
So much for the theory that length doesn't matter.
The only theory I ever had regarding speaker cable length, was to keep the pair equal length. But that's a no brainer.

actually--now that you mention it one side of each cable retained the bananna (on amp side) the side of cable going to speaker was raw. Hmm, I wonder if the lack of a connector/solder connection might have played a part in this--or maybe if there was some other change in my system or listening enviornment I glossed (but I don't think so).

*shrug* I'm happy, the wire is very manageble at that length and the only new hurdle I have is that I'm using a 3 foot PC on one mono block & a 10 footer on the other (new room outlets are a pain in the butt).

Well Gopher, what ever happened it happened for the good. Maybe it was the connector, maybe that cable just works better in shorter lengths. I don't think you glossed over any areas outside of the cable.
I'm glad you shared your experience. thank you.
