PS-1 or RS-1 - Page 3

IMHO the PS-1’s kick the snot out of the RS-1’s.

With the right track (1812 overture for example) they will certainly vibrate the snot right out...

I highly suggest using the VDA-1 + VAC-1 DAC combo, regardless of what headphone you end up buying.
I'm doing a search, but just incase I miss something could someone briefly explain the differences between the VDA-1, Headroom Micro DAC, and the more expensive Mini DAC?

Upgrade your source, but if you spend over $1000 on a DAC, the MS-2's are going to be the bottleneck in your system.

So, yeah, don't rule out the used market. And be sure to listen to the RS-1's and PS-1's in person before making a final decision if you can.

Which PS-1 at the meet had the distortions? I only listened to the PS-1 with balanced cable mod, which sounded fine to me. Did the other PS-1 have stock, unbalanced cable?

Anyways, Usagi, if you listen to lots of vocals and music with lots of midrange info (trumpet, guitar, etc), I would get the RS-1 over PS-1. PS is clearer and more neutral, but I do prefer the RS-1 midrange. One idea would be to get the RS-1, do the balanced cable mod, and use the $$ for a balanced amp..

Well.

Grandenigma did a review vs. the Benchmark DAC1 ($1000) and he preferred the VDA-1. There's also an EMU1212 vs. VDA-1 review by Asmo, and he found the VDA-1 to rock. It's a warm source, which I would prefer over something analytical/cold, while still retaining detail. But again, different strokes for different folks.

There aren't too many Micro DAC reviews, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with either.

Hmm, I remember the 1212 being reported a pretty warm too.

Which headphone has a more forward presentation?

I have heard two different PS-1's. Both I have heard were brand new outta the box when I tested them. The second pair I now own. I have never had this clipping problem. Best to look into that.

True enough Zanth, I have heard four other pairs as well as my own and none of them had a clipping problem. I think it's likely the pair with clipping might have had a defect...

Edwood is of course free to clarify himself if he wants, but I'm pretty sure he is referring to my set of balanced PS-1s, and the other poster mentioning the damaged phone is referring to another pairs (apparently Ray's?)

And in talking to Edwood, it was a single song (a song that LFF states he uses to test ALL speakers/headphones and very few can handle adequately). It was this song, well actually it was my understanding that he was not impressed with how the PS-1 handled a single timpany (?) note in that song.

LFF agreed, but myself and a few others basically said "yeah it doesnt sound like the HD650" and wasnt a big deal.

So, again, I think we may be overstating things a bit here? but perhaps for $1400, some expect it to be absolutely perfect?

Check the SoCal meet impressions thread for more thoughts on balanced PS-1 and overall the pair of balanced reference + PS-1 was very well-regarded....

and for what it's worth, it's still my favorite phone and the one I reach for first

Well considering a certain $4k phone is far from perfect, hoping a $1400 phone would be is of course short sighted. Not that Edwood was in fact hoping the PS-1's were going to be perfect.

Hmm, just saw this thread. Personally, I'd definitely do RS-1 + PPX Slam. Man, unless you have a fantastically dynamic source, the Gilmore Lite + PS-1 would bore me out of my mind.

Best regards,
