Hmm, don't know about low-priced amps. But my Heed does improve the SQ. I don't know where you get the idea that using an amp is like using EQ. To me, amplification gives more clarity and a bigger soundstage, as well as finer details. I guess you would have to try it yourself.

Then I guess I wouldn't do anything with an amp, since firewire audiophile's headphone jack isn't underpowered like it's in most soundcard's and alike. And if it really would make difference I would have to experience the difference myself with it, not go and spend money in what could be waste.



That's a picture from the control panel, with the phone volume as it is, it's a good listening volume. at 20 it gets really loud, and at 5 the headphones start to crack, since the drivers can't take the power.

To each his own, then. But one thing you should know: You do not buy an amp because you need more volume.

Yes, I know, it should produce more power to efficiently move the drivers even at lower volumes, but I doubt it's really an issue with my firewire audiophile. At least when comparing to all the sound cards and portables I've had.

Oh, and as a side note, I think the headphone jack in this m-audio is better than in my sony str db-870qs reciever, even when the audio is transferred digitally in to it. Granted, it's a cheap reciever, but either way.

An amp isn't about providing more volume in most cases and it's definitely not about EQ. An amp that could deafen you in a second could still be considered underpowered. A good external amp will react faster (better slew rate), will sustain voltage under load (better bass impact) and will minimise bad distortion (better clarity and resolution). Most inbuilt headphone amps will not match the better external amps out there and many as so far from this that it's ridiculous. I don't know about the firewire audiophile, M-Audio do make decent gear, but in my experience the HD595s work best with a tube amp. I've yet to hear a solid state device drive them properly.

Probably, but I reckon the cost of an external amplifier good enough to make a difference would be way too expensive.

And I do know the difference in sound which can be archieved with a decent amp compared to an underpowered one, even at low volumes. But my point has been that in my case I fear I'll just lose on quality if I don't buy an expensive external amp. Buy a cheap one and get muffled highs and boomy lows.

Edit: Firewire Audiophile is basically the same card as Delta Audiophile 2496, with more interfaces.

The LD2+/++ is the cheapest way to get these cans to 90% of their potential.

Maybe I'll try out the little dot micro tube for my portable player, let's see how it fairs out.

And now if only I knew where from I can find it in finland, or somewhere close :P

whoa... i haven't been here much and surprise, surprise, this thread is still alive. I've had many cans come and go but i still own the 595. It's the first good pair i had and made my gf "aware" of good sound. I've gone on to "better" cans but still listen to the 595 from time to time. If you're on a budget and can only afford 1 can, listen to a wide genre, this is definitely the one to get.

My 595s just arrived 20 minutes ago.

I thought they never would. I've just listened to a bit of Spoon and now onto the Crane Wife by decemberists, I've never heard toms with such bounciness.

Sigor Ros sounds gleeful and the warmest I've ever heard them.
The Philharmonic orchestra playing Oasis sounds extremely wide and the dynamics are great.
Californication sounds **** and distorted... No change there.

So, what exactly is a veil?
