Deletion authority?

Just curious, but why can't I delete my own posts? It'd be useful for getting rid of the occasional double posts...

I believe the settings are currently as follows:
  • You can delete your posts up to ten minutes after you post it, unless it was a thread-starting post, at which point a moderator must delete it.
  • You can edit your post for up to 10 minutes after you make the post without leaving an "edited by" mark. After that you can edit your post, but an "edited by" message will be appended to the post.
The reason for not being able to delete thread-starting posts is so that threads can't be deleted by the thread-starter once follow-on posts have been made.

The reason for the time limit on deleting non-thread-starting posts is because doing so can disrupt the flow of a thread conversation. That is, if I post something in a thread that is subsequently used by others as a determination for what they post, and then I go and delete my post, it may confuse those readers who come into the thread later.

Duplicate posts are usually caught by one of the moderators at some point. And if there's a thread or post you think should be deleted for whatever reason, PM me or one of the other moderators and let us know.

Why can't we delete thread starting posts after, say, 10 minutes of the post as long as that no one else posted a follow up?

Well, sure, but wouldn't just editing the post to have no text accomplish pretty much the same thing while still leaving an extra post lying around?

You're right DHWilkin... but, I seem to remember someone on this board, in reply to one of my posts, saying that we were all too mature to go around deleting threads and suchlike?!?

I regurlarily scour my "areas" for posts that seem to be erronous, and delete / move as I see fit... just depends who is moderating your area as to when it gets done

The easiest, although not the most practical way of doing it is to report the post to a moderator... that way, you can add a little comment like... please delete me, and all is cool... moderator informed, and job done

Because it's not specifically an option that I'm aware of.

Besides, it wouldn't work.

There could be somebody working on a 12 page reply to the initial posting (takes longer than 10 minutes) and when this somebody finally submits the reply he/she won't be very happy to see that the thread has been deleted in the meanwhile.

I assume you are meaning a certain long-winded former electron-microscope repairman-turned CEO...
